Can Crude Glycerin be Used Directly?

Crude glycerin, which is produced as a byproduct during biodiesel manufacturing, contains impurities such as water, methanol and salts. This makes it less suitable for direct use in certain industries. While it still has many of the basic properties of glycerin it is usually not ideal for personal care, cosmetics, or food products without additional refining.

These industries need higher purity levels to ensure safety and effectiveness. However Crude Glycerin can be used directly in some industrial applications like making soaps, resins and antifreeze where the presence of impurities is not as important. In animal feed it is used as an energy source after checking that it is free of harmful substances. So whether it can be used directly depends on the specific application and the required level of purity.
