  • Description : Skin irritation is common for the peristomal skin. Skin problems for ostomates manifest through redness, itching, pain, inflammation, and a lot more.
  • Location : United States

Overview

  • The primary reason behind skin issues is – you might have pulled off the wafer or the skin barrier after days for the first time! Stomal leakages are also one of the commonest causes of peristomal skin problems.

However, there are yet other causes. The attached pouch might exert unnecessary pressure as well as friction on the skin. The candidate might have had pre-existing sensitive skin. Lastly, cleansers, cleaning wipes, deodorizers, and other chemical applications could be the causative factor!

The peristomal skin becomes a good breeding ground for micro-organisms because the area is humid and warm. Cancer patients who take immunosuppressive medications, diabetic persons with low immunity, and such other vulnerable patients stand a higher chance of developing skin complications around their stoma.

    Ostomy care instructions

Cleaning the skin around the stoma involves some meticulous steps.
    • Go for a soft washcloth or a paper towel of premium quality for the cleaning task. Warm or lukewarm water is advisable.
    • The use of soaps, cleansers with oils, perfumes, and deodorants, are not recommended at all – they are often responsible for irritating the skin
    • Only a mild odorless soap may be used and no amount of soap residue or wetness should stay back on the skin – it prevents the barrier from sticking to the skin.
    • Use of alcohol, baby wipes, or towelettes that might contain lanolin and other oils may interfere with the peristomal skin's normalcy!
    • You need to be very careful about using any creams or powders on the skin around the stoma – the skin barrier would refuse to adhere to the skin.
