Overview

  • Welcome to the wonderful world of mushroom growing! Mushroom growth is a magical process in which mycelium converts solid matter into food. How dangerous is that ?! If you are new to farming, things may be a little fun dip and you may wonder what you can plant, but also how to grow it. Well, we are here to help guide you in your options.

    In general, you can

    • divide growing mushrooms into two separate areas - indoor and outdoor growing. Before we dive into it, there are a few words that will help you familiarize yourself with the upcoming trip, so take out your note (or, you know, just tick this page) and tie some notes.
    • Mycology: A study of mold. If you remember about biology, fungi form their own Kingdom, so there is much to learn. While mushrooms grow like plants, they breathe oxygen and release CO2 like animals, so mycologists get involved in both of your problems.
    • Spore: Actually mushroom seeds. Like pollen, spores are imperfect and require the best part of it to reproduce. When combined, it becomes fertile.

    Spawn

A carrier of strong fungal roots (mycelium) that can digest various substances to produce mushrooms. Spawn can come in several varieties including sawdust spawn, plug spawn, thimble spawn, and peg spawn. Learn more about each species here.

Mycelium: Simply put, mushroom roots. Scientifically speaking, fiber-like fungal cells are responsible for holding and digesting material (this information is known as a substrate) to convert it into mold food.

    Substrate

A food source for mold. This could be wood chips, logs, grass, etc.

Spawn Run: How long does it take for mycelium to pass through the substrate, converting what is important into edible material? When the mycelium has fully functioned in the substrate, we refer to the substrate as a complete colon. For example, a variety of wood-grown mushrooms with a gestation period of 12-18 months means that it will take several months at the right temperature for mycelium to fully grow in log. Once the log has been fully colonized it is ready to bear fruit!

    Injection

The process of planting a log, bed, bag or grass container, or any other suitable material containing mushroom seeds.

Now that we are out of the way, you are ready to move on and decide how you would like to grow and what. Kits in this beginner category come with complete instructions, video references, and, as usual, our customer support. If you need more help deciding what works best for you, just call us and we will be happy to help you!
