  In general, steam engines all work the same way. When the appliance is turned on, the water in the reservoir is heated, which creates steam. The device can then be swept over the garment, and the hot steam removes any unwanted wrinkles.

Delicate materials such as silk are best ironed with a dry iron. Water (including sweat and perfume) has been known to damage silk or cause fading.
