Overview

  • The fact that the most upvoted remark in this thread asks trying characters to get stats for mini-games says much about how the people who whine about AC with this sub really don't have any urge to play AC. You would like AC to be a very different game. I've put a ton of hours into every AC, and NH is Animal Crossing Bells undoubtedly, the biggest step the franchise has taken since the initial match. The quantity of freedom you have to make your town your own is foolish compared to the prior game.

I really like Animal Crossing and I concur that faux-RPG mechanisms wouldn't make for a much better Animal Crossing, but in a number of ways New Horizons felt like step back from New Leaf. The decoration systems are enhanced but the furniture variety is supremely lacking, so it felt much more difficult to make something that felt like it's represented me. I've seen lots of very creative designs, but I have also seen a ton of basically the exact same bedroom or kitchen or living space. It will not help that they ruined the customization choices of NL by creating just like half of the things not able to be customized, so forcing you to wait forever or attempt to trade for the ideal color box couch.

Being able to personalize your island is extremely cool, but the real-time aspect means my island constantly felt half baked. I'd begin to execute an idea, spend two weeks moving buildings, then realize that I don't like the outcome. I guess I need to focus on the positives of the island reshaping, but this was definitely something which left me feeling bummed.

The crafting system is cool, however the absence of infinite durability tools has essentially made me not want to touch the game again. I see no reason why golden tools will need to break. Or any tools will need to break. Is it just a mild annoyance to make/buy new tools? Sure. Nonetheless, it adds almost zero benefits to this game. In Breath of the Wild, your firearms break. Some found this annoying, I quite liked it. Why? Since it forced me to use different weapons which acted differently, and it gave some significance to the weapons I saved for powerful enemies. And I had many weapons at once and collected them so switching to some other weapon wasn't a chore. Each rod is the same as the past, there's no importance to any fishing rod. Unless you are actively timing your usage to coincide with excursions to offer your fish then you are going to need to waste time working to a store or crafting bench. It's a poorly designed system that straight up destroyed fishing and bug catching.

Speaking of bug catching, Nintendo chose to ruin that too. Outside of catching beetles on the island at New Leaf, bug catching has ever been terrible for earning money. It was so much easier to catch fish. When New Horizons came out, bug catching actually got you decent money. Several bugs with strong spawn rates were really worth good money. I had been enjoying making 300k roughly an hour by knowingly catching bugs. Considering that the costs of the large ticket items at the shop, that seemed about fair, and was fairly equal to fishing. Then Nintendo nerfed the spawn levels of these good bugs for apparently no reason. They also cracked down to the interest you have for having bells at the bank. It seemed like Nintendo thought it was too simple to earn money, but they dismissed the biggest moneymaker, the Stalk Market. In previous games, the Stalk Market was an actual gamble. Visiting different cities was a very involved process, in order that you were essentially relying on your own prices. With the rise of social networking and the relative ease of seeing different islands (a procedure which is nevertheless dogshit awful, Nintendo never ceases to amaze with their internet ineptitude) it became commonplace to find a good turnip cost each week to not merely double, but triple or quadruple your investment. With the increased stock, purchasing a high number of turnips was insignificant. So people may easily make millions of buy Animal Crossing New Horizons Nook Miles Ticket bells with little effort and virtually zero risk. Along with my social media (discord, twitter, etc) was filled with people asking and saying about turnip rates.
