  There has been a ton of controversy out there about what is going to count as a suburban area. The most basic definition is that it is an outlying part of a city. These areas are going to be close to a major city, but they will be further away from the center than some of the other locations. They also will not include the high-rises or other buildings that tend to be common in some of the other parts of a major city.

   

  Some argue that these neighborhoods can’t have the same city address as the metro area they are nearby. For example, if there is a house that has a Los Angeles address, even if it is 15-minutes or more from the LA proper, it would not be considered as a suburb by some people. But an area like Pasadena would be considered a suburb because it has a different name at the time.

   

  Others have a completely different definition of what is considered a suburban neighborhood. They will say that only the immediate and central city portions should be considered the urban area. However, most people agree that in many of the major cities of the country, these neighborhoods will be mostly residential in nature, with maybe a few local businesses that can help the residents get what they need, without having to drive or travel all the way back into the city to get it. This seems to stay steady, no matter what the formal definition of suburban may be at the time.
