There’s been plenty of weird news lately, but some of the weirdest was when the Pentagon released videos of three different unidentified flying objects, aka UFOs. So are aliens among us? Probably best to not get your hopes up. To find weird news, visit this website.
Keep in mind that “UFO” doesn’t necessarily mean “extraterrestrial spaceship.” Unidentified flying objects can be a number of things, including atmospheric effects and reflections or even a bug in the code of the fighter jets that caught them on video. The videos show the unidentified objects in question flying through the sky, one of them rotating against the wind. While this certainly stirs the imagination, it begs further research, and the odds of it being aliens are probably pretty low.
The problem with weird news involving aliens is that a lot of it isn’t as interesting as the actual scientific possibilities of extraterrestrial life. With more than 100 billion stars in the Milky Way, alone and billions of other galaxies out there, the odds of our little planet being the only one capable of supporting life seems pretty low. And real scientific organizations, like NASA actually do try to reach out to other systems in the Milky Way.
In other sad and weird news, you might have seen the collapse of the Arecibo Observatory radio telescope this year. One of the observatory’s functions was to send out radio communications to possibly contact other beings in our galaxy. Since radio waves are everywhere, including space, any extraterrestrial society would be able to receive them, assuming they’ve discovered radio technology as well.
With all that in mind, the chance of extraterrestrial visitors being behind these UFOs is low. It is very unlikely there is intelligent life on par with us that’s extremely close to us, as they would have been able to pick up on and respond to our radio waves (unless they chose to ignore them). But in order to reach us, they’d have to have technology that far surpasses our own, including interstellar travel. It’s unlikely that beings with this level of capability would be discovered this way. That being said, weird news happens all the time. So until (and if) these objects are identified, there’s nothing wrong with making guesses!
