Rogers said GGG was "absolutely operating in the assumption" that Blizzard would announce Diablo 4 this Blizzcon, until the recent writing. "POE Currency patch] 4.0.0 was designed to go up against D4, absolutely: we're operating underneath the assumption that individuals were going to need to bring our A-game with 4.0.0, because Blizzard can be announcing that."
As I noted during the time, the debacle around Blizzcon has stirred up an intriguing discussion not just about the franchise, wait, how developers discuss and announce games normally. For their part, so that as someone operating within the same genre and inside the same business more broadly, the Kiwi devs posited that Blizzard had gotten the messaging erroneous and had lost touch because of their fanbase.
"The way the PR went after [Diablo Immortal] ... that sort of bothered me a little. We all make a few mistakes about POE Orbs, it occurs. But it is weird if you double documented on that, which somewhat they have," Rogers said.
It's worth remembering, amongst this, that Diablo 3 is insanely successful despite its initial critical failings. It was the 10th most popular video game in 2015, having shipped over 30 million units, and sits behind Minecraft and PUBG as being the third-highest selling game across PC, Mac and Linux right at that moment of writing (excluding free-to-play titles).
It may possibly not have made more cash to date than World of Warcraft, which was lacking the benefit of shipping on consoles, or rapid use of Overwatch. But Diablo remains to be an enormous pillar for Blizzard symbolically, practically and financially, and what the results are to that franchise is of intense interest.
"They're a hair's breadth from saying it - they simply keep saying multiple Diablo projects. Just the thing! It's fine. If you the thing, all this controversy basically vanishes entirely. It's so silly if you ask me," Nick Kolan, designer at Grinding Gear Games, said.
