The escalator is a continuous conveying machine that is composed of a special structured chain conveyor and two special structured belt conveyors to carry people up and down between different levels of the building. The escalator inclination angle α should not be greater than 30 °. When the lifting height does not exceed 6m and the rated speed does not exceed 0.50m / s, the inclination angle α is allowed to increase to 35 °. The escalator or moving walkway shall be marked with at least one entrance and exit marked with the name of the manufacturer, the product model and the serial number.
A series of steps are connected with two traction chains and run on guide rails arranged in a certain line to form the ladder path of the escalator. The traction chain bypasses the upper traction sprocket, the lower tensioning device, and forms a closed loop through several straight and curved sections of the upper and lower branches. The steps in the upper branch of this loop (ie, the ladder path) should be strictly level for passengers to stand. The upper traction sprocket (ie, the main shaft) is connected to the motor through a reducer or the like to obtain power. Both sides of the escalator are equipped with handrail devices that run synchronously with the ladder path for passenger handrails. The armrest device is also driven by the aforementioned motor. When designing an escalator, it can be divided into ordinary type and public transportation type according to its loading condition and use time. The weekly running time of public transportation escalators is about 140h, and in any 3h interval, the continuous heavy load is not less than 0.5h, and its load should reach 100% of the specified braking load. Therefore, the escalator is particularly required to be durable.
The development trend of escalators is: compact structure, reducing occupied space; reducing equipment self-weight; reducing resistance, saving energy consumption; beautiful appearance, can also be used for decoration of buildings; stable operation, reducing noise.
Moving walks are also a continuous conveying machine that carries people. It differs from escalators in that the moving pavement is not a stepped ladder, but a flat pavement. The moving walkway is mainly used for transportation, and can also perform inclined transportation at a certain angle (α = 12 °). The same applies to public places where people are concentrated.
