DENVER -- Nolan Arenado has made a splash with his defence.
Doug Gilmour Jersey . On Saturday, the rookie showed he can deliver with his offence, too. Arenado hit a game-ending single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Colorado Rockies to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants, losers of six straight for the first time in three years. Michael Cuddyer singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 26 straight games. Arenado was expected to be with the Rockies in 2012 but was kept in Double-A. He finally got the call-up April 28 and has been entrenched at third base, where his defence has drawn praise from teammates and opponents. "I was telling all these guys in spring training, Hey, watch this guy Nolan in spring training, he can pick it," injured shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "You get a glimpse of it in spring training but it doesnt really click until you see him in game time." On Saturday, the Rockies needed him to contribute with his bat, and he didnt disappoint. Todd Helton was walked by reliever Jeremy Affeldt (1-4) with two outs in the ninth for Colorados first baserunner since the second inning. "Two-out walks will kill you," Affeldt said. Josh Rutledge ran for Helton, stole second and scored when Arenado singled up the middle on a 2-2 pitch to help the Rockies return to .500 at 41-41. "That was big on Rut, he basically won the game. If it werent for that it was just runners on first and second," Arenado said. "(Affeldt) hung a splitty and I was fortunate I put a good swing on it." The hit made a winner of Rafael Betancourt (2-3) in his first appearance since May 31. Andres Torres had three hits and Buster Posey had two hits and an RBI for the defending World Series champion Giants, who last lost six in a row from June 26 to July 2, 2010, a seven-game skid. "Its not a good stretch," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Ill leave it at that." Cuddyers streak is the longest in Rockies history and in the majors this season. He has reached base safely in a franchise-record 45 straight games. He took the drama out of it early with an RBI single up the middle in the first that gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead. "I had a chance to get out of that in the first inning and didnt make a good pitch to Cuddyer," starter Matt Cain said. "Being as hot as he is, you make a mistake to him, hes going to get a hit. I could kick myself for that (0-2 curveball)." Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa made the one-run lead stand until the sixth, when he gave up three hits, including Poseys two-out, RBI double that tied the game at 1. Posey has now reached safely in 47 straight games against the Rockies. De La Rosa went to the mound at the start of the seventh inning but never faced a batter. Manager Walt Weiss and trainer Keith Dugger came to the mound and checked on the lefty, who has been bothered by a bruise on his left thumb since June 17. After a brief conversation De La Rosa was replaced by Wilton Lopez. "He felt it early and it got progressively worse as the game went on," manager Walt Weiss said. "Well continue to work with it. Hopefully hell get that thing behind him at some point." De La Rosa said the thumb began to hurt when he was throwing in the bullpen before the game. He said he plans on making his next start. "For sure. Yes, I will," he said. The Rockies had missed a chance to extend their 1-0 lead in a mistake-filled bottom of the second. With Yorvit Torrealba on first, De La Rosa laid down a bunt. Third baseman Pablo Sandovals throw to second went into centre field and Torrealba advanced to third. Center fielder Juan Perezs throw to third got by Sandoval but Torrealba didnt score even though there was no Giants player covering home. The oversight cost the Rockies when Torrealba was caught in a rundown on Corey Dickersons groundout and DJ LeMahieu hit a fly to right to end the inning. It was the last chance Colorado had against Cain, who turned in his best performance of the season despite getting a no decision. He set down the last 20 batters he faced and showed his first two starts against Colorado this season were an aberration. In those games he allowed a combined eight runs and 12 hits in 11 1-3 innings. This time, he allowed just one run on three hits and struck out five in eight innings. "I started making pitches and started to get ahead of guys," Cain said. "I wasnt getting ahead of guys early." NOTES: Rockies OF Dexter Fowler missed his fourth straight game with a sore right hand. Vladimir Sobotka Jersey . This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season.
Wayne Gretzky Jersey . -- New York Yankees centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was sent for an MRI Thursday of his ailing right calf, which was negative.Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Intrastate rivals collide Saturday as the Texas State Bobcats hit the road to take on the eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns in a non-conference battle at Frank Erwin Center. Texas State enters the clash with a 5-1 record on the season, bringing with it a three-game win streak. The Bobcats have only dropped an 80-67 contest to Texas-San Antonio, and have since won three straight, which includes a, 81-65 thumping of Prairie View A&M last Saturday. Texas was sporting a 7-0 record on the season before the Longhorns headed to Lexington to tangle with the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Texas dropped the contest, 63-51, which ended the teams unbeaten streak. These two in-state rivals have met on the court 48 times in their all-time series history. Texas enters this 49th clash with a 43-5 record over the Bobcats, with an 85-53 destruction over Texas State occurring last season in Austin. Texas State put on an offensive clinic against Prairie View A&M in the teams last outing. The Bobcats finished the game shooting an impeccable 60.4 percent from the floor, including a 62.5 percent touch in the first half that allowed the team to gain a seven-point halftime advantage - one the Bobcats would not surrender. Emani Gant tallied a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace the team, while Jamarcus Weatherspoon netted 14 points and Wes Davis chipped in with 12 and four assists. Texas State took 30 free-throw attempts in the contest, and made 20 of them. When it comes to offense, Texas State hhas been a distribution of wealth model.
Jay Bouwmeester Jersey. Only Gant (16.2 ppg) has a double-digit scoring average this season for the Bobcats, while Cameron Naylor (9.0 ppg) checks in as the next-closest to Gants scoring total. But the Bobcats are still averaging a respectable 69.2 ppg on 48.4 percent shooting, and are sporting a strong defensive effort that has surrendered just 53.8 ppg to opponents. Gant has been a beast on the boards as well, grabbing a team-best 8.2 rpg with another team high in steals (14). The Longhorns did a solid job defensively to limit the top-ranked team in the country to just 63 points on 37.5 percent shooting from the field, but it was a dismal offensive day for the visitors. Texas shot a mere 29.8 percent in the contest, and hit just 4-of-20 from 3-point range in the loss. Jonathan Holmes paced the offensive effort with 14 points, while Demarcus Holland netted 10 points with five assists in the defeat. The Longhorns did exercise their dominance on the glass by outrebounding Kentucky, 42-31. Much like Texas State, the Longhorns have shown they can be overpowering on both ends of the court. Texas is averaging 69.9 ppg this season, and is holding its opponents to 53.9 ppg on just 31.6 percent shooting. Isaiah Taylor owns a 15.0 ppg average, though the guard has been out since the teams third game with a broken left wrist. He wont be back anytime soon for the Longhorns. Holmes (12.9 ppg) and Myles Turner (11.4 ppg) have stepped it up in the scoring department in Taylors absence.
