Players can control the exact same group, either by playing with different players, or dispersing the load of batting, pitching, fielding, and base operating among each other. This means you could play as your favorite group, take turns pitching, batting, and high-fiving every other in the living room. While there is room for improvement, MLB The Show 18 is far and beyond ahead of other games in the genre, and I expect other programmers will take a page out of San Diego Studios' offering.
The other main single player option, Franchise mode, has seen less tweaks -- in fact, it's really removed online play. As always, this allows you to behave as the GM of a team and control all the choices round a 162 game season. The menus have been overhauled to make management much easier, and you may opt to play with your campaign using the old-school Retro mode if you prefer, but there's not a whole lot different for returning players to sink their teeth into here.
Which renders Diamond Dynasty, the series' exceptionally addictive twist on Ultimate Team. Legends such as Babe Ruth have already been added
MLB The Show 18 Stubs to the card collecting portfolio this time around, while a complete heap of missions mean you could easily spend upwards of 1,000 hours building the best team here. You can take your own team online, or play single player across a number of returning modes, for instance, RISK-inspired Conquest.
1 last point of note is that MLB Network's Mark DeRosa has been added to the commentary roster, replacing Harold Reynolds. A lot of the comment has been recorded in the exact same room, which means all 3 bounce off each other, and it makes for some interesting back-and-forths. Naturally, the longer you perform, the more you are going to listen to repeated lines, however.
MLB The Show 18 is, for our money, the top sports game on console at this time. Whether you love baseball or not, this really is a flexible simulation that may appeal to both novices and veterans alike, with some of the very best presentation you'll find on the PS4. On paper this might not seem like a substantial step forward for the series, but the under-the-hood improvements mean that it is the very best playing, best looking version yet. We're not sure where Sony San Diego goes next with this particular series, but we say that every year, and it continues to smash our expectations from the park.
