On the morning of Jan. 10, the day after Dominic Guilmant’s birthday, his mom Justine woke up to a video message from Smith-Schuster. Justine Guilmant had reached out to the Steelers’ Pro Bowl receiver on social media to tell him her youngest son was a huge fan, and to her surprise, Smith-Schuster saw and recorded an 18-second long personalized birthday message for Dominic.
“Yo little man, what’s up? It’s your boy JuJu here, wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Smith-Schuster said. “Just want to say happy birthday. I hope you have a great time, hope it’s lit. … Thanks for being a Steelers fan, thanks for supporting, thanks for all the love. Let’s go beat the Browns today, man. Happy birthday. See ya.”The Steelers didn't beat the Browns, but that message was enough of a thrill for Dominic and Justine, who also received another reply from Smith-Schuster. This one was in response to something Justine said in one of the videos she made and tagged Smith-Schuster in: That Dominic wanted a No. 19 Steelers jersey for his birthday, but it wasn’t in the budget.
She did get Dominic a JuJu-themed birthday cake, which he loved, but a jersey would have to wait — or so she thought. Because Smith-Schuster told her he’d also be sending them one of those. Justine didn't tell Dominic right away, but when the package arrived this past Saturday, they both were surprised.
Not only did Smith-Schuster send the jersey, but he signed it, too. Justine couldn’t wait to tell the world about an act that Smith-Schuster himself didn’t promote anywhere.“When he actually did that, I broke down,” said Justine, who has followed Smith-Schuster’s other charitable endeavors. “This is amazing, and I couldn't thank him enough.”
Justine became a Steelers fan about 10 years ago, eschewing the most popular options in Iowa, the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. She and Dominic, who has three siblings — Qwanell, 11, D’montae, 8, and Zariyana, 4 — fell in love with Smith-Schuster when he burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2017. They’ve heard the complaints from Steelers fans about Smith-Schuster’s dancing and his TikTok antics and brand-building, but to the Guilmants, that side of him helped make a young boy’s birthday.
