His face contorted in a grimace of effort as he sprinted out of the saddle to the line, while spectators whipped up a thunderclap of noise by banging their fists on the barriers. He, too, rode hard but looked more comfortable with his easy-on-the-eye pedaling style, perched on his saddle, legs pumping underneath him like pistons in an ocean liners engine room. Contador shook his head and shrugged his shoulders when television flashed that Froome beat his time by 9 seconds. This was another opportunity lost for Contador -- 4 minutes, 34 seconds back in second place in the overall standings-- to make victory for Froome in Paris on Sunday at least feel less inevitable. "Froome is in impressive shape," was the understated assessment of the 2007 and 09 winner who was stripped of his 2010 victory for a failed doping test. The last Tour champion -- now ex-champion -- to carry as many stage wins as Froome to Paris was Lance Armstrong. That was in 2004, when Armstrong won five stages and declared hed be giving "no gifts" to his rivals. That is all just a bad memory now. This Tour is the first since the serial dopers name was erased last year from the races honour roll, literally crossed out in the official history book. Froome swears that wont happen with him. He has repeatedly said when asked at this Tour that he is riding clean -- an assurance that only has limited value in the poisonous atmosphere of doubt that is a legacy of the Armstrong years and the Americans confession to Oprah Winfrey this January that he cheated for all seven of his Tour wins, from 1999-2007. "The problem today is that we are traumatized by the past," Stephane Heulot, manager of the French Sojasun team, said in an interview. "Weve seen too many stories like this. Weve seen too many riders swearing on the heads of their kids, their grandmothers, their mothers that theyre completely clean and then -- bam! -- 15 years, 10 years, five years later were told other things. Someones word no longer means anything. We cant rely on that." A union that represents about 600 professional riders from seven European nations supported Froome on Wednesday against what it called "unjustified allegations of doping." "Its not fair to blame someone without evidence against him," Gianni Bugno, president of the Association of Professional Riders, said in a statement. "We demand more respect for Chris and for all the riders." In four days, as long as he gets through the Alps, Froome will be able to sip champagne in the saddle on the final ride to the Champs-Elysees, unusually staged in the evening this year. That would make it two victories in a row for Britain and for Team Sky, after Bradley Wiggins win last year. With wins in the Pyrenees and on Mont Ventoux, Froome has shown excellence going uphill. It would be a big surprise if he wilted on the three days of Alpine climbs that start on Thursday with a double ascent to the ski station of LAlpe dHuez, with its 21 hairpins bends to the top. Done twice, thats 42 bends packed with spectators to be negotiated. It promises to be frenzied and spectacular -- a dramatic crescendo for what already has been a highlight-rich Tour. But there are questions about how comfortable Froome is speeding downhill. He has voiced concern about a hairy descent without safety barriers that the pack tackles between the first and second ascents to LAlpe dHuez. He appealed to race organizers to cancel the Col de Sarenne descent and make the pack ride just once to LAlpe dHuez if it rains Thursday. "Just in terms of the safety of the riders, I think that has to come first," Froome said. That eventuality was ruled out by Jean-Francois Pescheux, the event director. "This is the Tour de France. Rain hasnt ever stopped the Tour de France. It would have to really be a natural catastrophe that blocked the road or something like that," he told The Associated Press. "Rain isnt the enemy of the cyclist -- its part of the sport!" It was certainly part of Wednesdays time trial, but not as much as initially feared. While it did rain on parts of the course, the forecast storms hit only after Stage 17 finished. That was a relief because the route went up two climbs in the mountains above the man-made Serre-Poncon lake. The twisting descents could have been terribly treacherous if wetter. Froome covered the 20 miles in 51 minutes, 33.66 seconds. "I went into today thinking: OK, Im going to give this a really good shot, but Im not going to empty myself," Froome said. "I really expected to lose at least 30 seconds to a minute to some of the best riders." Contadors gutsy ride bumped him up from third to second in the overall standings, although he is more than four minutes back from Froome. "When you are second, its easier to get to first place," Contador said hopefully. "But its true that he is very strong." Bauke Mollema dropped from second to fourth overall. The Dutch rider went too fast into a right-hand bend, slapped into the barriers and briefly came to a stop. Some riders chose road bikes for the tough course. Contador opted for a time trial bike with an aerodynamic back wheel. Froome used both -- switching from an adapted road bike to a time trial bike for the final descent into the town of Chorges. "The first bike was more adapted to climbing," Froome said. "The second bike was a little faster."

Our first set of reviews focused on class and tri-class cards this expansion; now we move on to the neutrals announced so far.We start off with the Big-Time Racketeer, six-mana 1/1 that summons a 6/6 Little Friend (I love Scarface references). The first thing I ask myself on a card that isnt vanilla is How can this be exploited in a win condition? Six-mana 7/7 is perfectly reasonable in itself, but theres not a ton of synergy with cards it likely will be paired with. The exception is Brann Bronzebeard, who triggers Battlecry twice, but Brann has trouble surviving a turn -- making Brann + Racketeer a win condition -- and 13/13 of stats for 10 mana that doesnt affect the board isnt really that great. Fine in Arena, where stats rule.Im always on the lookout for anti-aggro tools, and the Second-Rate Bruiser fits the cards here. By becoming a three-mana 4/5 with taunt if your opponent has three minions -- and insane amount of value -- it fills a needed role, buying time if playing against low-curve decks flooding the board with tokens. A 4/5 minion with taunt isnt exciting on Turn 5 otherwise, but its not a dreadful card that loses you the game if you play it.Kooky Chemist, Crazed Alchemists (a two-mana 2/2 with the same text) bigger cousin, doesnt strike me as a card likely to see competitive play. Two additional mana for 2/2 stats is worse than a vanilla two-mana minion, and if you want the effect, you can just choose to play Crazed Alchemist for fewer mana. Might see some play in Arena, but likely a little below average.Another early-game card, where Second-Rate Bruiser tries to be the new Sludge Belcher, Mistress of Mixtures is an attempt to replace the beloved Zombie Chow. 2/2 is a worse line than 2/3 at fighting for board, but you also get four health back, where Zombie Chow only healed the opponent for five. This is significant because control decks that would use this card would sometimes see their health a little too low when the Face Hunter simply ignored Zombie Chow and went face.For neutral legendaries, we start off with Patches the Pirate, a Stonetusk Boar that gets played for free whenever you have a Pirate. On the surface, the effect looks exploitable, but I think this card wont be as solid as many in the community think. It does give you a free 1/1 and thins out your Pirate deck. However, to make a one-turn-kill deck, you likely need to be playing Gang Up, but then youre stuck having Gang Up, which wont always be able to hit this target. In a pure Pirate deck, youll frequently not be able to play this at the moment you want because a Pirate deck needs to play pirates.For cool artwork and concept, Finja, the Flying Star is tough to beat. Unfortunately, it doesnt really fit Murloc burst decks, and the old-style Murloc decks, where you just stuff in every good Murloc, arent good enough these days.Madam Goya is a card with interesting possibilities, but one I think that will not see that much play. Why? Because she needs a deck around her to make her effect work well, but that effect itself isnt good enough. If it were, wed see competitive YShaarj decks and Varian Wrynn be more than a very niche choice in Control Warrior. A six-mana 4/3 has to have an effect thats completely bananas to see play, and this one doesnt. Sure, you can get a second Reno Jackson effect off, but you can already do this with one of the Brewmaster cards, and preciselly zero people are doing this in high-level play.

Theyre not, and Blizzard hasnt done anything with the mechanic since the Grand Tournament was released, so there likely arent yet-to-be-unveiled cards that will make this card bonkers. A three-mana 3/4 has good stats, so this will mostly be seen in Arena, where you do sometimes end up with Murloc Knight or Kvaldir Raider. Thunder Bluff Valiant is the only card I see that can really exploit this, but I dont think its good enough for Midrange Shaman, which, while very much a fan of triggering the Valiant twice, wants to already have a scary board by the Turn 9 required for this combo.Friendly Bartender is a straightforward card to look at. We have lots of two-mana 2/3 cards that do something, and in this case, the something just isnt that appealing. Just not good enough, but will at least exist in Arena.Thats more than can be said for the Wind-up Burglebot, which too often will be simply a six-mana 5/5 with no effect, which is absolutely dreadful. Whats the dream for this card? That you play this on a board of token on Turn 6 and start clearing a token every turn? Cards are nice, but if you actually have time to take advantage of this effect, youve probably won anyway, so the card doesnt do anything of value.The Fel Orc Soulfiend is a tricky card to value. Getting a three mana 3/5 on turn three is terrific, but its also a card that will die on its own if you dont invest mana in it to keep it alive. I can see some shenanigans in a Priest deck, but the problem is youd need a Priest deck that actually chooses to play Silence or Purify, and in that case, Injured Blademaster and Circle of Healing are the more useful combo. This will see play in Arena, however, as it can remove a 3/2 or a 4/3 and survive a turn unless the opponent invests another minion or a costly ping into dealing with it.Windfury is one of the more difficult mechanics for Blizzard to manage, as theres a fine line between a card being superpowerful and overpriced and unplayable. The Grook Fu Master is probably on the latter line but would be insane at one fewer mana! Its too costly, and like Windfury Harpy and Thrallmar Farseer, both similar cards that are a bit too expensive, will only see some edge play in Arena. Whirling Zap-o-Matic remains the only successful Windfury card that doesnt have crazy burst potential (as in Raging Worgen and AlAkir the Windlord).Im surprised that the Worgen Greaser wasnt named the Worgen Rager, given the theme of high attack/low health and unplayability. A four-mana 6/3 is no more playable than a three-mana 5/2. The developers have said that all expansions are going to have some bad cards. This is one of them.Meh. Thats my only reaction to the Backroom Bouncer, a four-mana 4/4 that needs a lot to go right to be playable. You need at least one minion to die just to make it a 5/4, and if you wanted to play a 5/4, there are already a lot of them to choose from. A 6/4 or a 7/4 gets a bit more interesting, but the four health makes it easily removable no matter how large it gets. Id rather play a guaranteed 7/4 Ancient Shade at the same cost and risk the seven health instead of killing three of my own minions.
