BATON ROUGE, La.
Pacers Jerseys China . -- Ed Orgeron, the burly, boisterous Cajun who energized LSUs football program in the wake of coach Les Miles dismissal, briefly and uncharacteristically struggled to speak. The 55-year-old from the small bayou town of Larose, Louisiana, was trying to publicly thank his mother and late father when his distinctive, raspy, baritone voice fell silent and he paused to keep from sobbing. The significance of the moment had fully set in.On Saturday, LSU formally named Orgeron the permanent head coach of the flagship college football program in the state where he was raised before venturing out on a career that took him from coast-to-coast and back again.Growing up in the state of Louisiana, watching the Tigers play, we get it, said Orgeron, who is only the third Louisiana native to coach the Tigers since LSU joined the Southeastern Conference in 1933. We understand what you gave to us and the accountability that we have to the people of the state of Louisiana, to LSU, and everybody that played here. The announcement by athletic director Joe Alleva came two days after the No. 25 Tigers defeated No. 22 Texas A&M 54-39 . Following Thursday nights game, players raucous chants of Keep coach O could be heard from LSUs locker room.Weve got our man. Hes been here all along, Alleva said. We know where coach Os heart is. We know where his love is. We know where his passion is. ... Its part of his DNA.Orgeron has gone 5-2 since taking over for Miles, who was fired Sept. 26 after LSU, which entered the season ranked No. 5 in the AP preseason poll, started 2-2. LSUs two losses since Orgeron was promoted came against No. 1 Alabama and 13th-ranked Florida , the Southeastern Conference East Division champion -- and the loss to the Gators came down to the final play.It was the second winning interim stint at a major program for Orgeron, who went 6-2 at USC after Lane Kiffin was fired in 2013.Now Orgeron has his second full-time head coaching job at the Division I, FBS level. The first also was in the SEC -- at Mississippi from 2005 to 2007. But he never had a winning season with the Rebels, going 10-25.Alleva asserted that there is ample evidence that Orgeron has grown since then.He is a mature, veteran coach that has learned over the course of time from numerous great mentors and has taken the good qualities from mentors and assembled them into what he wants to do, Alleva said. He knows now what his strengths are and he knows what his weaknesses are, and he highlights those strengths and he will fortify his weaknesses with people that he hires.Alleva divulged that one of Orgerons mentors, current Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, called LSU to stump for his former USC assistant.Orgeron said hed hit the recruiting trail immediately. After players take final exams, hell start preparing the team for a bowl game that has yet to be determined and then round his staff through the offseason. My plan is to take my time and assemble the best staff in America, Orgeron said, adding that defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has committed to remaining at LSU. I just know this: Im trained, ready to do this. ... Ive learned from my mistakes. Im ready to build a championship program.Orgeron said he expects to lure an elite offensive coordinator wholl be adept at running a spread offense, which he sees as a requirement in the modern game. He declined to mention candidates, even when specifically asked about Kiffen, an old friend who is currently the offensive coordinator at Alabama. With his Cajun accent, friendly disposition and what his sons describe as a prodigious appetite for gumbo, Orgeron is relatable to Louisiana football fans. His grass-roots support has been evident since his first walk into Tiger Stadium as interim coach.Hes been a household name in his home state for decades, having won a state championship at South Lafourche High School, where his teammates included quarterback Bobby Hebert, who would go on to an NFL career, notably with the New Orleans Saints. Orgeron was recruited by LSU and initially committed there, but later decided to follow Hebert to Northwestern State. He has coached with several major programs, including Miami, Syracuse and Tennessee, as an assistant -- often serving as a defensive line coach and leading recruiter. He also spent a season as a defensive line coach with the Saints. He arrived at LSU as a defensive line coach under Miles in 2015.During his interim stint at Southern Cal, Orgeron was also quite popular with players, but USC passed over him to hire then-Washington coach Steve Sarkisian, who has since been fired.USCs post-Orgeron experience became a cautionary tale for LSU, which also figures to save money because it wont have to buy out another coachs contract. The university is paying a $9.6 million buyout to Miles.Had LSU gone all-in for an up-an-coming coach like Tom Herman, who was hired away from Houston by Texas on Saturday, it could have been much more expensive.Alleva said LSUs coaching search was never going to come down to a bidding war, adding we knew that coach O was never going to play games with us.---More AP college football:

The French defender looks a good fit for Pep Guardiolas Etihad Stadium revolution, writes Nick Wright. Pep Guardiola counts Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa as one of his biggest influences so perhaps it is not surprising that he shares his idols admiration for Aymeric Laporte. The French centre-back was schooled by Bielsa as a teenager at Athletic Bilbao, and Guardiola is eager to continue his education at Manchester City next season.Sundays 2-2 draw with Arsenal showed why the incoming manager has identified central defence as Citys most pressing area in need of attention. This season they have conceded more Premier League goals (40) than in any of the previous five, with Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala struggling to meet expectations and Vincent Kompany repeatedly falling victim to injuries. Major changes are required, and while Evertons John Stones is among the names to have been talked up, Laporte appears to be the priority for Guardiola. Citys sporting director Txiki Bergiristain has already flown to Bilbao to discuss the deal with Athletic, and reports in Spain suggest City are ready and willing to pay his £39m buy-out clause. Laporte on City rumours Aymeric Laporte denies he has agreed to join City but Sky sources confirm he is a target. It is a huge sum for a 21-year-old still recovering from a broken leg suffered playing for Frances U21s in March, but he is due to return in August and the feeling in Spain is that he is worth the investment. Laporte has developed a burgeoning reputation over the course of four seasons in Athletics first team and has already amassed over 100 La Liga appearances despite his tender age.Basque journalist Endika Río has followed his progress from the start. He is a central defender with the profile that Pep Guardiola likes, he tells Sky Sports. Hes strong, tall and powerful but what characterises him most is playing out from the back. He makes the central midfielders jobs easier. He has good distribution and he has quality with the ball at his feet. Watch some of Aymeric Laportes best moments for Athletic Bilbao That technical ability is invaluable to Guardiola, whose attacking philosophy requires modern, ball-playing centre-backs who can build quickly and fluently from the back. The role was fulfilled by Gerard Pique at Barcelona and David Alaba at Bayern Munich, and Laporte, it seems, will be the man for the job at Manchester City.A money-spinning transfer to the Etihad would cap a rapid rise for Laporte, who was only 18 when Bielsa promoted him to Athletic Bilbaos first team in November 2012. It was quite a difficult year for Athletic, recalls Río. Javi Martinez had left and they were having trouble renewing Fernando Amorebietas contract, so Bielsa promoted Laporte even though he had hardly played for the reserves. A City ready for Pep The appetite for Pep Guardiola in Manchester will be greater than it ever was in Munich.
Myles Turner Jersey. Laporte was thrust into the heart of a struggling side, but the 6ft 2ins teenager swiftly established himself as a regular starter in central defence. Bielsa saw characteristics in him that fit with his style of football, says Río. He soon filled the gap left by Amorebieta. He was a boom.Bielsa loved Laporte - I dont remember a single fault I could tell you about, he said in 2015 - and he made 17 appearances before the 60-year-old was replaced by Ernesto Valverde in the summer of 2013. Bielsas gruelling training methods had taken a heavy toll as Athletic finished 12th in 2012/13 but the squad were reinvigorated by Valverde. Laporte, in particular, went from strength to strength. Laporte battles for the ball with Barcelonas Luis Suarez and Marc Bartra Laportes second year in the first team was Valverdes first in charge, says Río. The team finished fourth in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League. Laporte was part of the spine of the team and became the líder of the defence. He was still 19 but no one disputed it despite his age. Bit by bit, he has improved a lot in very little time.Laporte has come out on top in duels with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo since breaking into the Athletic team. He helped them reach the final of last years Copa del Rey and played every minute of their historic 5-1 aggregate win over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup in August. Laporte is a great player with every quality. I don’t remember a single fault that I could tell you about. He’s fast, he has character, he is competitive, he has very good technique and he is very intelligent. Marcelo Bielsa on Aymeric Laporte in 2015 Laporte is an accomplished one-on-one defender who doesnt shy away from physical challenges, but he prefers to rely on his fine reading of the game and intelligent positioning rather than gung-ho tackling. He has an excellent range of passing and averages more per game than any other Athletic player with the exception of central midfielder Beñat, while he is also a goal threat, having scored five times this season alone before he was injured in March. As for weaknesses, there is little to cause alarm. In some games you can still see his youth and inexperience, says Río. There have been some errors and he has been sent off for inexperienced fouls, but with time he has got better. You can see that he learns very fast for a player so young, and its not surprising that some of the biggest clubs in Europe want him. Laporte in action for Athletic Bilbao against Espanyol Like Bielsa before him, Valverde is a huge admirer. Hes young and he has to improve some things but hes already the real deal, he said in October. He is a player who is mature, despite his youth. On the pitch you see that because he takes responsibility for his position. Experience is always important, but if you already have that experience when you are 22, then imagine…Laportes rare combination of technical ability, physical prowess and youthful experience has thrust him to the forefront of Manchester Citys plans. Their defensive problems have been costly this season, but as they prepare to usher in a new era at the Etihad Stadium, Bielsas pupil looks ready to make his next step up with Guardiola.
