In this case, it was Coastal. They were a little bit better with runners on base tonight and wiggled out of some jams.Ginkel matched Coastal Carolinas Mike Morrison almost pitch for pitch. Ginkel struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings and allowed two runs and five hits.He was spectacular tonight and gave us everything he could and everything we needed, Johnson said.Morrison was sensational in his first start of the season, helping the Chanticleers rebound from a 3-0 loss to the Wildcats in the opener.That was a whole lot of emotion going on out there, and its hard to describe it, having not been in that position before in my life, said Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore, whose program is in the CWS for the first time. Our guys kept breathing pretty good, and we got through it.The Chanticleers from Conway, South Carolina, will play the winner-take-all game for their schools first national championship in any sport.Arizona is going for its fifth national title in baseball, and second since 2012, in a season when it was picked to be one of the bottom teams in the Pac-12 in Johnsons first year.Its going to be a very exciting opportunity -- two very good teams that have been playing well down the stretch, Owings said. You cant write it better than it is right now.Owings was batting .125 (3 for 24) in the CWS when he stepped to the plate against Ming in the eighth. The Big South player of the year fought off a high inside pitch, sending it into short left field to drive in Anthony Marks from second base with the go-ahead run.After Zach Remillard chased Ming (3-3) with a double, G.K. Young followed with a two-run single off Alfonso Rivas to give the Chanticleers a three-run lead.I just dont think he was quite as sharp, Johnson said of Ming. He didnt want to come out of the game, which I love that about him. But hell be available and in the mix tomorrow for sure.Arizona (49-23) made it a one-run game in the bottom half after Bobby Holmes (7-2) walked two straight to load the bases with none out. One run came home on Justin Behnkes groundout, and another scored when shortstop Michael Paez bobbled Louis Boyds routine grounder.With Coastal Carolina (54-18) running low on pitching, Gilmore turned to Morrison, his senior closer, to start a game for the third time in his career. Morrison responded with career highs of 6 2/3 innings, 103 pitches and 10 strikeouts. He allowed six hits and two runs and left to a loud ovation from the teal-clad Chanticleers fans.I put my heart and soul into this program for four years, and to end it like that, that was special, Morrison said. That standing ovation was probably the coolest thing thats ever going to happen in my entire life.FAST STARTERSIn 12 CWS games at TD Ameritrade Park (2012 and 2016), the Wildcats have outscored opponents 16-0 in the first inning. Leadoff man Cody Ramer has reached base to start the last four Arizona games, leading to five runs.WINNING DEBUTThe Chanticleers are attempting to become the first team to win the championship in its first CWS appearance since Minnesota in 1956. Pound!Full disclosure: I remember sitting at a bar with another MMA reporter in Temecula, California, a few years ago and asking him something to the effect of, What is it with people and pound-for-pound lists? Everybody has got one. None are really right or wrong. Theyre basically pointless.The two of us then proceeded to argue about our pound-for-pound lists for at least 30 minutes, which is ultimately whats great about these lists. Even though I do still think they are rather pointless, they can be a lot of fun to argue about.So, lets have some fun.Lets take a look at my current pound-for-pound list and try to predict how it will change over the next 12 months. And keep an eye out for the female version coming soon.Who will still make the list?Demetrious JohnsonCurrent rank: No. 1And I think hell still be ranked No. 1. That would be quite something, since, according to the archives, I had DJ ranked No. 1 at this time last year as well. So, were talking about the UFC flyweight champion holding down the No. 1 spot two years running.I believe in the greatness of Jon Jones as much as the next guy, but Johnson has been more dominant (and active) in what Id argue is a deeper division. Hes the closet thing this sport has to a perfect fighter, and he has been for a while.Jon JonesCurrent rank: No. 2Its still strange to consider the very real possibility we havent seen him at his best yet. Jones has admitted that prior to his arrest on a hit-and-run charge in April 2015, he never reached his full potential due to issues outside the cage. In the 18 months since, he has fought just once (against Ovince Saint Preux in April) and looked rusty.Im willing to bet on Jones in the next 12 months -- but even with his talent, thats probably somewhat of a risky bet. This sport is hard enough without the self-sabotage.Dominick Cruz and TJ DillashawCurrent ranks: Nos. 3 and 4 respectivelyI think I have Dillashaw ranked higher than most. Im not sure about that since, as previously mentioned, I dont spend much time (i.e. none) looking at other pound-for-pound lists. Im very comfortable with that, though.Dillashaw is one of the most well-rounded fighters in the game, and I never thought his controversial decision loss to Raphael Assuncao in 2013 was legit. He really only has one definitive loss in his career and that was in his fifth pro fight. And considering A) How high I rank Cruz and B) How close their bantamweight title bout was in January (which Cruz won by split decision) ... how can I rank Dillashaw much lower?Who wont?Josee AldoCurrent rank: No.

Theres plenty of misdirection when it comes to what fighters say, what promoters say and what coaches are willing to divulge. In a lot of ways, this sport is one big mind game -- and that refers to trash talk between fighters as well as negotiations between athlete and promoter.But with Aldo, at least right now, Im kind of taking his comments about not wanting to fight at face value. Do I actually believe hell never fight again? No, I dont. But do I believe theres a legitimate chance he has lost a little fire for cage fighting? I am willing to believe that. Whether due to inactivity or lack of motivation when he does step into a cage, I think Aldo could drop on this list.Stipe MiocicCurrent rank: No. 8Its the curse of being a heavyweight. It is really hard to stay on the pound-for-pound list as a heavyweight because youre always one split-second away from unconsciousness. I love Miocics mental approach and I dont really expect him to lose. Thats why hes on my list to begin with, but hes always at a higher risk of losing, simply because of the division he competes in.Who could really go either way?Conor McGregorCurrent rank: No. 5What is a pound-for-pound list? To me, its trying your best to envision every fighter competing in the same weight class. So, by default, if McGregor wins UFC titles in multiple weight classes, that would be a big reason to rank him extremely high.In other words, if McGregor, who holds the featherweight title, defeats lightweight champion?Eddie Alvarez next month and holds two UFC championships ... and then goes on to defend one of them a couple times next year, hell be in the conversation for best fighter in the world. At the same time, we still really havent seen him against a well-prepared wrestler. That wrestler question still exists. Does he have a hole there? It remains to be seen.What Im trying to say is McGregor shooting up this list or falling off it completely are both feasible options to me. Might as well see it through.Luke RockholdFour months ago, you could have made a case Rockhold was Top 5 during his middleweight title reign. One Michael Bisping left hook at UFC 199 has silenced that. I think we were probably right back then and Rockhold just had a bad night.
