Revolutionising Liver Health Through Bhutanese Innovation: PM Lotay Tshering Supports Breakthrough Turmeric Fermentation Patented by Ninapharm
Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan – May 13, 2025
A new chapter in liver health and agricultural innovation was unveiled at Expo 2025 in Osaka, where Ninapharm introduced a patented fermentation process for Bhutanese turmeric—developed in collaboration with the Royal Family of Bhutan and Her Majesty the Queen Mother of Bhutan.
The fermentation, based on rare microbial strains found in the highlands of Bhutan, significantly increases the formation of potent bioactive metabolites. These compounds are shown to offer hepatoprotective effects, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and related metabolic conditions.
This world-first innovation, granted French patent PCT/IB2023/051371, is the result of years of dedicated research by Ninapharm's Innovation Labo, in partnership with Bhutan’s Ministry of Agriculture. Notably, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, PM Lotay Tshering, was present at the event, reflecting the national significance of this scientific milestone.
Unlike isolated curcumin, the fermented turmeric extract delivers a broader range of health benefits through microbiome modulation—enhancing bioavailability and efficacy. This positions Bhutan at the forefront of modern phytotherapy and microbiome-based health solutions.
In addition to human health applications, the fermented turmeric formula has also shown agricultural promise—already in use for rice cultivation and poultry health enhancement in Bhutan, and now expanding into Japanese rice farming trials.
