Web design workflow for beginners

  • Oh man, been there! When I started freelancing, I was constantly Googling “how wide should a nav bar be” at 2 a.m. ???? What helped me tons was this comprehensive post on website guidelines by Clay. It’s basically a crash course in building thoughtful, modern websites from layout grids and typography to accessibility, mobile responsiveness, and interaction patterns.

What I love is that it doesn’t just tell you what to do it gives you the why behind each principle, which makes explaining decisions to clients a lot easier. Whether you're designing from scratch or trying to improve what you've got, it's packed with tips that'll actually make your work better. Saved me from so many rookie mistakes. Give it a read you’ll level up fast.

  • I’m working on my first full site build for a client and trying not to totally wing it ????. I’ve got the creative side down, but when it comes to structure, usability, and all those small best-practice details I feel like I’m missing a blueprint. Are there solid resources out there that act like a general guide for building good websites?
