NEW YORK -- It took all afternoon before Curtis Granderson finally generated some goodwill at Citi Field.
Mousa Dembele Jersey . The slumping Mets newcomer hit a sacrifice fly in the 14th inning and New York outlasted the Atlanta Braves 4-3 on Sunday to prevent a three-game sweep. "It felt really good," Granderson said. "Any way to help the team win a big game." David Wright had four hits and New York took advantage of three early errors by Atlanta, which had won seven of eight. Granderson went 0 for 6 with an error and was booed all afternoon. But he turned those jeers to cheers at the end of a long day. "Cant help but not hear them. I havent given them anything to cheer about," he said. Kirk Nieuwenhuis drew a leadoff walk from Gus Schlosser (0-1) and advanced on Ruben Tejadas sacrifice bunt. Eric Young Jr. was intentionally walked to bring up Granderson, hitless in his last 16 at-bats and stuck in a 4-for-44 slide thats dropped his average to .127. "Id rather have chose to pitch to myself as well," Granderson said, well aware of his early struggles. "Ive seen it before on the outside looking in, but Ive never had to deal with it myself to start a season." The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Granderson lifted the next delivery into medium left field. Nieuwenhuis slid home ahead of Justin Uptons throw, and the Mets mobbed Granderson near first base. "Terrible pitch. Elevated. Thats what hes trying to do right there and I let him do it," Schlosser said. New York manager Terry Collins moved Granderson from cleanup to the No. 2 spot in the lineup, hoping to get him started. Granderson, who even tried an unsuccessful drag bunt Sunday, signed a $60 million, four-year contract in December after an injury-plagued season across town with the Yankees. "Im really happy for him," Collins said. "Something he can build on, move forward, and get it going." Jose Valverde (1-0) worked a scoreless inning, hours after he was demoted from his closer role in favour of Kyle Farnsworth. As late-afternoon shadows crept toward the mound, neither team could muster much offence in extra innings. Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out five in three hitless innings for the Mets. Called up from the minors last week, Matsuzaka was pitching on consecutive days for the first time in the majors. He made his second career relief appearance in his season debut Saturday night. "I told him that I could go. When it went into extra innings, I knew Id have to pitch some," Matsuzaka said through a translator. "This is my role for the time being, so Ill do my best." Scott Rice kept it tied in the seventh by getting New York nemesis Freddie Freeman to ground into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners. Mets starter Zack Wheeler tossed six innings against his hometown team before he was pulled for a pinch hitter in a game that lasted 4 hours, 37 minutes. "You play that long you want to win, obviously. So yeah, thats rough, but its part of it," Upton said. "Something had to give and it gave their way. Nothing you can do about it." Braves rookie David Hale wriggled out of bases-loaded jams in the second and sixth -- both after errors by second baseman Dan Uggla. Hale was making his second straight start against the Mets and pitching for the first time in 10 days because his scheduled outing Tuesday in Philadelphia was rained out. Wheeler helped himself with an early RBI grounder and took a 2-0 lead into the fifth. Then he issued a leadoff walk and the Braves surged ahead with consecutive one-out doubles by Jason Heyward, B.J. Upton and Freeman. New York tied it on an RBI grounder by Lucas Duda in the sixth, a double-play ball that could have ended the inning if Uggla hadnt botched it. Young scored on Wrights first-inning groundout after Justin Upton muffed his slicing fly for a two-base error. NOTES: Schlosser pitched 3 2-3 innings and singled in his first major league at-bat, moments before the 14th-inning stretch. The souvenir was taken out of play. ... INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis may finally have the kind of defence that can complement its offence, and Andrew Luck likes it. After throwing two touchdown passes and watching the Colts suddenly dominant defence score its own TD in Saturday nights 27-6 victory over Cleveland, Luck explained the best part of the night for him was standing on the sideline as the Colts defence went to work. "Theyve been opportunistic, theyve been getting their hands on balls," Luck said. "They were a pain in the butt to go against in practice, and its fun to see them play this way out here." When coach Chuck Pagano took the Colts job last year, he promised to improve the usually maligned defence. Now, the Colts are finally beginning to show what they can do. Over the last two weeks, Indy has not allowed a touchdown. Before leaving early in the third quarter Saturday, the starting defence limited Cleveland (2-1) to four first downs and just three plays in Colts territory, one of those being a punt. They forced two turnovers, including Larry Asantes late 48-yard interception return for a score, and harassed Browns quarterbacks all night long. Cleveland never even made it into the red zone. "Its very exciting to see guys humming around, having fun and getting the job done at the same time," five-time Pro Bowler Robert Mathis said. Saturday nights performance also was a drastic improvement over what Colts fans witnessed in this same venue two weeks ago, when Buffalos rookie quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel dinked-and-dunked their way to a 44-20 victory that drew the ire of Irsay. Of course in that game, most of Indys starters exited before the end of the first quarter. This time, Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden had to contend with a very different lineup. Pro Bowl safety LaRon Landry made his preseason debut against the Browns, and linebacker Pat Angerer was on the physically unable to perform list against Buffalo. Having both back marked the first time this preseason the Colts had their entire starting unit on the field at the same time. The result: Weeden went 12 of 25 for 105 yards just four days after coach Rob Chudzinski chose him as the starter for the regular season. There were drops, turnovers and penalties. Trent Richardson carried seven ttimes for 31 yards, but the rest of the Browns managed only 28 yards rushing.
Vincent Kompany Belgium Jersey. Cleveland didnt even get on the scoreboard until Weeden took them on a 48-yard drive -- against the Colts backups -- that ended with Shayne Grahams 50-yard field goal late in the third quarter. And all this from a team that had beaten the Rams and Lions by a combined 51-25. "We can learn a lot of things from this game. A game like this is good, because you can get an assessment of where youre at," Chudzinski said. "They played very well on defence, and by the same token, against good football teams, playoff-calibre teams, you just cant make mistakes." Luck, meanwhile, had no trouble. Despite losing starting right guard Mike McGlynn (bruised knee) in practice this week and left tackle Anthony Castonzo (right knee) on the games opening series, Luck still managed to go 16 of 25 for 164 yards with one interception and ran four times for 20 yards. He opened the game by taking Indy on a 46-yard drive to set up Adam Vinatieri for a 32-yard field goal, and two series later, capped a 66-yard drive by finding fullback Stanley Havili for a 3-yard TD pass to make it 10-0 midway and hooked up with a wide-open T.Y. Hilton for an 8-yard TD catch to make it 17-0. Cleveland futilely played catch-up the rest of the night, and scoring ended, fittingly, on Asantes interception return. "They had played two really good football games and they looked impressive running the football, and Brandon Weeden had thrown the football," Pagano said. "Its a confidence builder, a big psychological boost for our guys." Notes: Pagano said Castonzo had a sprained medial collateral ligament and will undergo an MRI. Indy also lost receiver Nathan Palmer with a sprained knee late in the game, and Palmer also will have an MRI. ... The Browns lost rookie defensive back Josh Aubrey (hand) and Jamoris Slaughter (groin) in the second half. ... Reggie Wayne caught seven passes for 79 yards for Indy. ... Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer were a combined 10 for 18 for 123 yards against Colts backups. ... NFL referee Tony Corrente made his first appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium since last Novembers foul-mouthed tirade, part of which made it onto the television broadcast.
