Organosilanes are hydrocarbon-like and have the ability to act as ion reducing agents and free radical reducing agents. These reagents and their reaction by-products are safer than many other reducing agents and are easier to handle and dispose of. The metallic nature of silicon and its low electronegativity relative to hydrogen lead to Si-H bond polarization, producing hydrogen and hydrogen and a milder reducing agent compared to aluminum, boron, and other metal-based hydrides. Some key silane reduction reactions are outlined in Table 1 of the Silicon-Based Reductant Handbook.
