"That's been a bizarre phenomenon," says Alex Mayberry on the morning before the release of Diablo's radical expansion, Reaper of Souls. I question him on what it's been like to see Diablo become so closely linked with a feeling of dissatisfaction. "I don't know if that gets overemphasised. Who is our voiceless minority, and what's that figure? Even if it's one percent or two percent, that's a lot of people."
Two percent of unhappy Diablo owners are 280.000 people. That's a lot of angry users. "It's been hard to distinguish all the voices in the cacophony of voices," Mayberry adds.
Reaper of Souls launches tomorrow with new loot-dropping mechanisms as well as a brand-new Crusader model, a new level 70 cap and another Adventure Mode, and the removal from popular Auction House. Many of its mechanical changes are being incorporated back into the game's vanilla version in patch 2.0.1. but the general message is that players will have more variety of loot to choose from more frequently. The overall reaction has been positive. "It's pleasant to get people to react to the changes," Mayberry says, "and I believe the changes are fantastic."
"We believe we're in excellent position because we want to play continuously," he added. "There's plenty of excitement and we're anxious for what the public is going to say. "Leading the charge for Reaper of Souls is Josh Mosqueira who took over for game directors in June 2013. Mayberry has explained the impact certain decisions he made have affected the game.
