Toen de proost van het kapittel van Sint Jan in 1085 het gebied rond Amstel en Kromme Mijdrecht in handen kreeg, veranderde het landschap van Uithoorn enorm. De eerste pioniers vonden hier veengebieden met stroompjes die overtollig water naar de grote rivieren afvoerden. Bij het Rechthuis, waar de proost rechtszittingen hield, ontstond al snel een kleine nederzetting genaamd Uithoorn. Ongeveer 1 kilometer ten noorden daarvan lag destijds een grotere buurtschap genaamd Thamen. Men leefde hier voornamelijk van landbouw en veeteelt. In de 12e en 13e eeuw ontwikkelden zich talloze nederzettingen aan de oevers van de Drecht, Kromme Mijdrecht, Amstel en in de nabijgelegen omgeving bij het Legmeer. Denk hierbij aan plaatsen als Kudelstraat, Vrouwenakker, de Banken, de Kwakel, Uithoorn, Thamen, Blokland en de Hoef.
