Microsoft Licensing for Home Vs. Business

Microsoft Office comes in several different versions, including one for home and another designed mainly for businesses. To cater to the different audiences, Microsoft offers various licensing options. Microsoft also offers a Web version of Office to better serve their customers who need additional licenses. Each license may only be used on a single computer or device.
Home Licensing
If you purchase the standard Microsoft Office Home and Student edition, you only have one license. You can install Office on a single computer, but the license is transferable. The single license includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. For additional licenses, you must purchase more copies of Office. Multiple license copies of Microsoft Office have been replaced by the online-based Office 365.
Business Licensing
Microsoft offers two different Office versions for businesses. Both Office Home and Business and Office Professional only give you one license. The license is transferable. However, businesses planning to purchase five or more licenses qualify for volume licensing. A volume license allows you to install the same copy of Microsoft Office on multiple machines at a discounted price.
Businesses that need more than just the Office applications should consider Office Professional Plus. This version of the software supports more enterprise options, such as enterprise voice, information rights management, unified instant messaging and better privacy controls for businesses and organizations.
Office 365 Licensing
Microsoft Office 365 is a online version of Microsoft Office. For a monthly or yearly fee, you have access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access on up to five devices. For more licenses, you must purchase additional subscriptions. SkyDrive storage, Skype minutes and access to the latest version of Office without needing to manually upgrade are included.
Volume Licenses
Volume licenses are designed mainly with businesses in mind. However, home users needing multiple licenses qualify as well. Volume license options are not available for Office Home and Student. Home users must purchase Office Standard, which includes the four base programs plus Outlook, Publisher and Office Web Apps. You must contact Microsoft in order to purchase volume licensing.
