have used reverse osmosis systems to purify water using several different methods. These include activated carbon, distillation and reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis filtration is a common method, but most people don't really understand how it works.
To understand reverse osmosis, we should first understand conventional penetration. Water wants to achieve chemical balance, and penetration is the natural way this happens. A weaker solution will naturally lead to a more powerful solution. If a two-volume solution is used to separate two volumes of water, the water will flow from a lower concentration solution to a higher concentration solution, resulting in two volumes of water having the same Concentration of contaminants.
Water flows from a lower concentration to a higher concentration
In the above figure, the containers are separated by a semi-permeable membrane. This barrier is dotted with thousands of holes that allow water to pass through. On one arm, you pour fresh water and the other hand pours salt water. When fresh water flows through the membrane until the brine ratio on both sides is the same, the level of brine will slowly rise.
A natural example of infiltration is that a plant absorbs water through its roots, or the kidneys absorb water from the blood.
