Terms to Know When Renting a New Apartment

Signing a lease agreement can be a big step for someone who is just moving out of the home for the first time. That lease is the legal framework of what you will need to do when living in the apartment, and what you can expect from the landlord as well. But there may be a few terms that you are not familiar with when it comes to renting an apartment for the first time and some of these are:

# Lease; This is the legal document that you will sign with the landlord. It will tell you your responsibilities, the responsibilities of the landlord, how much the rent is, and how long the lease is good for.

# Security deposit: This is an amount that you pay the landlord when you first move in. If you take good care of the apartment, you will get this amount back when you move out. If you destroy the place and the landlord has to fix it up, then they will keep the deposit.

# Renter’s insurance; You may not be required to have this depending on where you live, but it is still a good idea to have it. If something happens to your personal belongings, then you will be happy you have this to protect you.

# Tenant: this is going to be the person who is going to rent the apartment from the landlord.

# Late fees: If you are not able to pay the rent on time, then you may be subject to late fees. The landlord should list these out in the lease agreement so you know about them ahead of time.

# Guarantor: This is someone who will co-sign the lease with you and can be on the hook for the rent if the tenant does not pay it. If this is your first apartment, you may need to have a guarantor to get into it.

# Breaking the lease: This is going to happen if you need to get out of the apartment before the lease is done and can have penalties.
