What is Wake on LAN?

Posted By E-Lins Technology     Jul 22

Body

Wake-on-LAN (WoL) is a network protocol that allows a computer or device to be powered on remotely over a local area network (LAN). This feature is particularly useful for IT administrators, remote workers, or home users who need to access their systems without physically pressing the power button.

For WoL to work, the target device must support the feature in its BIOS/UEFI settings, and the network adapter must remain powered even when the system is off. A router can facilitate WoL by forwarding the "magic packet"—a special network broadcast containing the target device’s MAC address—to wake it up. Some advanced routers even have built-in WoL tools in their admin panels, allowing users to trigger wake commands via a web interface or mobile app.

However, WoL also has limitations. It typically works only within the same subnet unless properly configured with port forwarding. Additionally, power-saving settings or incompatible hardware may prevent it from functioning correctly. Despite these challenges, WoL remains a valuable tool for remote management and energy-efficient computing.

Is there a IoT router supporting WoL, I suggest you take a view of e-lins.com.
