Vancouver Island is much more than the home of the capital of British Colombia, Victoria. This large island is known for its beautiful parks, breathtaking beaches, and fascinating architecture. But, one of the foremost reasons why tourists come to the island from all over the country and beyond is whale watching. Vancouver Island whales & fishing tours have their fan base, and each year people flock to see the magnificent creatures in all their glory. So, if you are also planning to head to the island soon, here are a couple of things you need to know about whale watching.

Never try to touch, feed or swim with them

Trying to touch, feed, or swim with the whales is a bad idea because you would be trying to modify their natural behavior this way. And, in the process, you run a great risk of getting hurt. Whales are unpredictable just like any other wild animal, and you are no match for that multi-ton mammoth creature.
Besides, touching can end up transmitting harmful diseases, and feeding them is not necessary. Keep in mind that it’s their home, and you’re the guest. So, don’t make your hosts feel uncomfortable!

Pack all the necessities for the day

It is at least ten degrees cooler on the seas, and slight rain might occur during your whale watching adventure. Remember to dress up in layers, and wear rubber-soled, sturdy shoes. Also, keep a rain jacket with you even if there is the slightest chance of drizzle.

And, even though it’s cooler on the seas, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and hat. Make sure that the heat doesn’t blow away in the strong wind, and use a lanyard for your glasses. It is also a good idea to take motion sickness medicine about thirty minutes before boarding the boat.

Get the right kind of camera for the activity

Now, this is something that you might not have heard much before today: the usual point-and-shoot camera is not able to offer the magnification and speed required for the best images. Remember that the whale watching guidelines mandate you to watch the whales from a distance, so you need a really good camera to capture all the action.

If you have a 35 mm camera with a 300 mm lens, you will get good stability and zoom for whale watching. Also, have a clear memory card and loads of batteries because the sightings are simply spectacular at Vancouver Island.
