How to test Sealed Gel Battery

The Sealed Gel Battery is different from most traditional batteries in that it is sealed and does not use liquid electrolytes. Instead, silica is added to the electrolyte to thicken it into a gel, which is suspended in the battery. Because of this, the Sealed Gel Battery has the characteristics of splash resistance and more corrosion resistance. However, the Sealed Gel Battery is generally more expensive than traditional batteries and cannot be refilled. This also means that gel batteries cannot be tested with a hydrometer. The easiest and fastest way to test gel batteries is to use a digital voltmeter.

  step 1

Access the gel battery by removing the terminal cover. Then disconnect the battery from the vehicle. Remove the negative pole of the Sealed Gel Battery first, and then remove the positive pole. For most vehicles, you need a variety of socket wrenches to completely disconnect the battery.

  Step 2

Connect the tester lead/clip of the voltmeter to the Sealed Gel Battery. The lead of the negative tester must be connected to the negative pole of the battery, and the lead of the positive tester must be connected to the positive pole.

  Step 3

Turn on the voltmeter and view the displayed reading. If your Sealed Gel Battery shows that the battery level is between 12.85 and 12.95, it means that it is 100% charged. A voltage of 12.65 means that it has only 75% of electricity, while a reading of 12.35 is related to 50% of electricity.

  the fourth step

If you receive a low voltage reading, please charge the Sealed Gel Battery. Make sure you use a voltage-limited battery charger (also known as a float charger) to perform this task. Conventional chargers should not be used for gel batteries, as they may overcharge and damage the battery. The voltage-limiting charger will charge at the set rate and will turn off when fully charged.

Let the Sealed Gel Battery sit for 24 hours after charging. This will dissipate the surface charge and provide a more accurate reading. After 24 hours, retest the Sealed Gel Battery with a voltmeter. If your Sealed Gel Battery shows low battery again, it may need to be replaced.
