For many people, regardless of their profession or hobby, the COVID-19 has changed life drastically. From working at home to adjusting to new technologies to engage with others, COVID-19 truly has had a lasting effect on our lives. Some of these changes are negative, and others are positive. In the world of dance, putting these changes into perspective is critical.

Most of us have said farewell to in-person classes and live performances. Especially for those in dance, this is a particularly harsh blow. Dance is a physical expression of music and emotion. So, although there is plenty of technology for engagement between students and teachers, it demotivates many dancers to continue. Without interacting positively with teachers, dance lessons feel like a moot point. As well, most dancers do not have the floor and equipment to be safe while they dance. Dancers, like everyone else, had to make dramatic changes.

There have been benefits that developed between dance and the pandemic. Online lessons have become more affordable for students. While most dancers find this change frustrating, as they should, but there have been positive moments that have blossomed in this challenging situation. Although there is not studio time, technology has allowed students to spend less on lessons, and it has also created more space for dancers with disabilities. This increased exclusivity has provided students that perhaps could not have physically gone into a studio before. A dancer with disabilities can now dance in a place where they are genuinely comfortable.

Perhaps one of the best benefits of online dance classes is the cost. Many online dance classes are low-cost or free. Dance is an expensive passion, from the right shoes and clothing to lessons at a studio with a reputable teacher and attending live performances, and costs add up. However, with online streaming dance lessons and performances, more students can access the world of dance. Dance can now reach a wider audience, which is always a good thing.

Your Dance classes in Calgary may be over Zoom, but it is essential to keep going. So many of us, while going through the pandemic, so many of us have found it hard to move forward and give our hobbies the attention they need. Still, it is critical to find hope and fall in love with dance one lesson at a time.
