Sadly, our modern world can be full of distractions and temptations. Often, children are distracted by technology, such as TVs or computer games. And while technology isn’t inherently wrong, striking a balance between screen time and spending time together, exercising, and socializing are critical.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always easy with modern life being so fast-paced. And, of course, mommying can be a tricky task – just as a mother of three and humanitarian, Vanessa Getty! Still, it’s not impossible to balance your child’s screen time with a few simple tips to help them enjoy technology without becoming an overwhelming force in their lives.

3 Great Tips For Getting A Balance of Technology In Your Child’s Life

Technology can offer countless opportunities – but it may also be tricky to balance, especially once your child’s developed a love for it. Still, the following three tips may help!

#1 Build in Screen-Free Times

Screens can quickly take over if not managed properly, so establishing set times that a child can use technology or screens is essential. For example, this concept could be a set time of day that they can access the screen or simply a specific time allowance that you can spread over the day.

Once that time is used up, it’s essential as a parent to stick to it so that your child knows when enough is enough. This idea should also include not having screens around the dinner table while eating and making sure children still get physical activity. So, getting a balance is critical.

#2 Encouraging Screen Use That Is Productive, Educational, or Active

Not all screen use is bad. Encouraging your child to view educational material or active and interactive material can be a great way to urge your child to learn in new and varied ways. Always try to balance screen use, but if it offers your child an opportunity to learn something new, you shouldn’t stop them. Instead, try to help your child choose good content that isn’t too fast-paced and develop a new understanding through stories, characters, or educational material.

#3 Setting Bedtimes

Setting bedtimes is hard as a mom, but making sure that your child doesn’t use screens until they sleep will help them sleep better and help them develop healthy routines. Setting rules such as no screens one hour before bed is a great way to encourage this.

In turn, you should encourage your little one to try and find something quiet or relaxing to do instead, such as coloring, reading a book, or doing a puzzle. Ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep is essential; plus, this simple change may help prevent them from throwing tantrums down the line!
