What is a Move-In Inspection?

There are a number of different inspections that you are able to do when you move into a new property. As a renter and tenant, you will want to make sure that the inspections are done at the right times to ensure that inspections can get done and you won’t be responsible for damages that are not your fault. While there are many optional inspections that need to be done, one inspection that you should consider doing is the move-in inspection.

This move-in inspection is something that is going to happen on the first day of the lease for the tenant. These will be essential to the upkeep of the property. You and the landlord or someone who is acting on behalf of the landlord will go through the property together and can document the state of the property. If there is major damage, the tenant can get it in writing that the landlord will get it fixed. This documentation will be used later when the tenant moves out to make sure that the tenant is going to get their security deposit back.

During this inspection, the landlord and the tenants are going to go through the property and look for some pre-existing damage. Whether it’s damages that need some repair or appliances that require updates, new tenants will be able to note all of the current issues in the property, which meant they were there before they moved in. After the inspection is done, the landlord can go through and document the accuracy and document their own findings as well.

This document will be brought back out during the move-out inspection. They can compare the current state of the property with the notes that were left during the move-in. Outside of normal wear and tear for living in the property, the landlord will be able to compare and decide what needs to be fixed and repaired, taking that out of the security deposit and sending the rest back to the tenant at their new location. In some cases, the damage may be severe and the tenant will owe more money.
