The Different Types Of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a type of medical device that provides support for teeth in the absence of natural teeth. There’re 3-types of dental implants: single-tooth, multi-tooth, and bridge.

Single-tooth implant: Single-tooth implants are inserted into the jawbone where the missing tooth is. They connect to the surrounding bone with metal screws and an acrylic or plastic cap. These implants last up to 10 years, although they may need to be replaced sooner if they become loose or if the patient experiences pain from chewing.

Multi-tooth implant: Multi-tooth implants can replace multiple teeth in the mouth. They come in two varieties – fixed and removable – and both have similar features. Fixed multi-tooth implants remain in place after being inserted into the jawbone; removable multi-tooth implants can be pulled out after being placed and replaced with another set of implantable teeth later if needed.

Bridge: A bridge is a dental implant that replaces one or more missing teeth with an artificial tooth. The bridge comprises four parts – two front portions and two rear portions – which are attached to either side of the original tooth by metal screws. Bridges last anywhere from five to ten years, although they may need to be replaced sooner if the patient experiences pain from chewing.

 Dental Implants: What are they?

Dental implants are artificial teeth inserted into the jawbone to replace teeth that have been lost or damaged. Inevitably, dental implants can be made from various materials, including metal, plastic, and natural bone. There are 3-main dental implants: screw dental implants, dental plate implants, and bridge dental implants. Each has its benefits and disadvantages.

  • Screw dental implants are the most common type used in dentistry. They consist of a screw placed into the jawbone with an accompanying spur. The screw tightens against the spur, which supports the implant and holds it in place. This type of implant is primarily used to replace teeth that have been lost or damaged.
  • Plate dental implants are similar to screw dental implants but use a metal plate instead of a screw. The metal plate is attached to the implant spur and screwed into the jawbone. This implant is often used to replace teeth destroyed by decay or trauma.
  • Bridge dental implants are similar to dental plate implants but include a bridge piece connecting the two sides of your mouth. The bridge piece supports your teeth and helps prevent them from moving. Bridge dental implants often replace teeth lost in an accident or cancer treatment.

How do Dental Implants Work?

Implants are dental restorations made of either titanium or surgical steel. They are inserted into the dental pulp (the innermost part of the tooth) and provide long-term support for teeth that have lost their structural integrity.
