WRITING STYLES: TYPES

Writing can be categorized into four primary categories: expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative. Each of these writing techniques has a particular function. More than one writing style may be present in a single work.

EXPOSITORY

One of the most popular styles of writing is expository writing. When a writer uses an expository writing style, they’re attempting to transfer knowledge to a larger audience by explaining an idea. Expository writing focuses on established facts about a subject, such as statistics or other proof, rather than the author's opinions.

DESCRIPTIVE

Descriptive writing can be found in both fiction and nonfiction, though it is most common in the former (for example, memoirs, first-hand accounts of events, or travel guides). An author who uses a descriptive writing style gives their readers a verbal picture of a person, place, or thing. The author may use metaphor or other literary strategies to express their feelings through their five senses (what they hear, see, smell, taste, or touch). However, the author only describes things as they are, with no attempt to persuade the listener of anything or to interpret the scene.
