Grade 316 is the second most common stainless steel casting material. It has nearly the same physical and mechanical properties as 304 stainless steel and contains a similar material composition. The main difference is that 316 stainless steel contains about 2% to 3% molybdenum. Addition increases corrosion resistance, especially to chlorides and other industrial solvents. So the cost of 316 stainless steel castings is slightly higher than that of 304 stainless steel castings.
316 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance because it contains Mo element. It is usually used to make corrosion-resistant parts in contact with seawater or corrosive chemical media, such as valve castings, chemical equipment, outdoor lamps, medical equipment parts, marine hardware, heat exchanger parts, pipes, etc. 316 steel is CF8M in the United States and 1.4408 in Germany.
