The latest pandemic has disrupted the alcohol market like no other event has. Several state governments finally caved and authorized home delivery because of the substantial loss of Excise income that would have resulted from not doing so. What happened after that is ancient history.
Obviously, we backed that choice. But we must not treat this as a reflex, but rather as a positive shift in perspective. We have always advocated for this cause, not because it is trendy or profitable, but as it is the superior choice.
Here are some of the reasons why, in our opinion, offering home delivery is a huge step forward.
It helps keep kids from getting drunk
There is currently no system in place to prevent a minor from entering a store, showing their ID, and purchasing alcohol. That will not happen anymore thanks to home delivery. To prevent this, liquor shop owner check proof of age during the sign-up process, the Know Your Customer process, and the delivery process. The courier is to cancel the order and file a report under certain circumstances.
It helps cut down on drunk driving.
According to research, when they run out of alcohol, 40% of impaired drivers go out and get more.
Sixty percent of orders were placed on weekend days, and seventy percent of orders were placed between five and nine o’clock at night. It is convenient for shops to stock.
The more stores we link together, the more of their stock may be accessed with a single mouse click. Using free market ideas established a level playing field with impartial system logic. The ordering process was first-come, first-served, and priority was given to stores that already had the necessary supplies in stock.
Essential information for developing policies
As of right now, no useful secondary data insights are accessible. While governments may be aware of the total volume of whisky, rum, or beer sold each year, they lack details about consumption trends, frequency, repeat behavior, and the like. This information is essential for designing effective policy and advocacy initiatives.
Many other factors come into play, such as the need to report fake alcohol, the need to safeguard Excise money, the need to reduce theft, the need for better regulation through technology, etc. All these factors suggest that governments should think about implementing age-verified, accountable last-mile distribution.
