Why Won’t My Motorbike Start?

Understanding the intricacies of your motorbike is paramount to every rider. Few situations can be as disheartening as gearing up for a ride and finding out your motorbike refuses to start. Thankfully, many of these problems have straightforward fixes. Let's delve into some common reasons why your bike might not be starting, and of course, give you some potential solutions on how to fix them.

Dead Battery
One of the most common culprits behind starting issues is a flat or faulty battery. Batteries can deplete if the bike hasn't been used for an extended period, or if there's a malfunction within the charging system.

Luckily this is an easy one, simply use a multimeter to check the battery's voltage. If it reads below 12 volts, consider charging it. If it consistently fails to hold a charge, it might be time for a replacement.

Clogged Fuel System
Your motorbike requires a clean flow of fuel to the engine. Over time, the fuel can become contaminated or the fuel lines clogged.

The solution here is to check the fuel lines and filters. Replace any that are damaged or overly dirty. Ensure you’re using the right grade of fuel and consider adding a fuel stabiliser if storing your bike for long periods.

Spark Plug Issues

Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine. A faulty or dirty spark plug can hinder this process.

We recommend removing and inspecting your spark plugs. Look for signs of soot, damage, or wear. Replacing spark plugs is relatively inexpensive and can make a significant difference.

Faulty Starter Motor
The starter motor plays a pivotal role in cranking up the engine. If you hear a clicking sound when you try to start the bike, this could be your issue.

This is a bit more involved and may require the expertise of a professional. Consider reaching out to a trusted mechanic or service like Taverner Motorsports for a diagnosis.

Neutral or Clutch Engagement

Most motorbikes have a safety feature where they won't start unless they're in neutral or the clutch is engaged.

Therefore, ensure the bike is in neutral, or if it's in gear, make sure the clutch lever is pulled in when attempting to start.

There are numerous reasons why a motorbike might not start, ranging from simple fixes to more complex mechanical issues. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent many of these problems. If you're ever in doubt, don’t hesitate seeking out the expertise of professionals. We are after all, here to help.
