Outdoor apparel. Since polyester garments are both durable and moisture-resistant, it’s a common choice for outdoor clothing that needs to be able to keep you dry in inclement weather. Parkas, windbreakers, and other outerwear are often made of polyester.

High tenacity and durability make it very appropriate for clothing production. As a strong fiber, polyester can withstand strong and repetitive movements. Its hydrophobic (water-repelling) property makes it ideal for garments and jackets that are to be used in wet or damp environments, coating the fabric with a water-resistant finish intensifies this effect.

The short fiber strength is 2.6—5.7cN/dtex, and the high-strength fiber is 5.6—8.0cN/dtex. Due to its low moisture absorption, its wet strength and dry strength are basically the same, and the impact strength is 4 times higher than that of nylon , 20 times higher than viscose fiber.

Like nylon, sublimation Polyester fabric is one of the most popular synthetics in the world. It’s a plastic that is in everyday products but is also fibers for making fabrics. You also live your entire life with polyester by your side whether you know it or not. From fabric to your own computer, polyester is somewhere in your life so it’s time to find out more about it!

Fabric graphics uses this full color printing process with heat sensitive sublimation dyes to be printed on a special release paper. The release paper is sandwiched with white polyester-blend fabric and run through a heat press at 400 degrees under pressure rollers. The heat and pressure turn the solid dye from the transfer sheet into a gas which becomes permanently embedded into the fabric fibers. When removed from the heat press, the fabric is then totally washable! less

First, some history of plastic. (Hey, I’m a professor.) Polyester plastic was discovered in a DuPont lab in the late 1930s, but scientist W. H. Caruthers set it aside to work on his newly discovered nylon. A group of British scientists applied Caruthers’ work in 1941 and created the first commercial polyester fiber in 1941 called Terylene. DuPont purchased the legal rights in 1946 and created another polyester fiber: the now familiar Dacron. Eastman Chemical created another polyester fiber in 1958 called Kodel. less

This means that fabrics, which are 100% polyester, can be given permanent pleats and decorative shapes and patterns can be laser-cut into them. They are also highly stain-resistant, so great for cleaning.

It’s very resilient and can withstand a good deal of wear and tear. It’s basically plastic. In fact, plastic bottles can be recycled into polyester fabric. Polyester is not compostable, meaning it doesn’t break down well in soil. Think about this in a landfill.
Less fading: Polyester holds dye well to prevent fading, but doesn’t produce as “rich” of a color as cotton. High-quality polyester holds its shape well and doesn’t shrink.

There are three essential components to this type of garment printing: heat-reactive dye, polyester or polyester-blended fabric, and a sublimation printer. On the surface, the process looks like basic printing, in that the material goes through the printer, which transfers the image onto the surface. However, with sublimation printing, a chemical reaction bonds the dye to the sublimation Polyester fabric on a molecular level. Once it goes through, heat is introduced to open up the pores of the fabric and transform the dye from a liquid into a gas. The temperatures range from 350° F to 400° F. Pressure is then momentarily applied to ensure the dye permeates the fabric. Once it’s done and removed from heat and pressure, the pores close up, locking the dye in. less

They were interested in the work of W.H. Carothers, the chemist who discovered Nylon, the first synthetic fiber. Stemming off of Carothers’ research, the British chemists patented the first polyester in 1941 under the name Terylene. Soon after in America, DuPont purchased the rights to Terylene and begun manufacturing its own version of polyester, which debuted in 1951 under the name Dacron. less

1. Ethylene Polyester
Ethylene polyester, also known as PET, is the most popular type of polyester on the market. In most contexts, the word “polyester” is synonymous with “PET” even though other types of polyester exist.
