guidelines in the UK and many other countries are currently based on suspicious evidence. That's why the Public Lighting Research Group at the University of Sheffield conducted a research project to understand the relationship between lighting and the sense of security after dark, and to improve the evidence on which the public lighting guidelines are based.
In a recent experiment, we asked people to walk on some streets in Sheffield at night and assess their sense of security. We also require these people to walk and rate the street on the same day to create baseline security measures and consider the deviations that may occur if the safety rating is taken only after dark.
The difference in safety levels between day and night walks tells us about the lighting on that street, the smaller the difference between day and dark levels, and people feel safer because of lighting. We compared the different ratings of the participants to the lighting metrics on each street, including the average illuminance (the amount of light falling on the street surface) and the uniformity (the degree to which the illumination is evenly distributed).
