Starting an Apartment Fish Tank

Fishkeeping can be a very fun and rewarding hobby to have and just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t start your own collection of fish. While you should always check with the landlord or rental agreements of any downtown Denver rentals to ensure that keeping fish is ok, most apartments won’t have an issue with fish tanks. If you are new to fish keeping there are a few steps to consider as you get started to ensure the greatest rate of success so that you can create a tranquil, beautiful tank with happy and healthy fish.

Planning Ahead

Before you get to buy a tank and bring home fish and decorate with tank decorations, you are going to need to do a little research and planning first. There is a lot to consider when it comes to fishkeeping, from the fish you want to the type of tank you get. Do you want freshwater or saltwater fish? What kind of tank filtration will work best for the type of fish you want? How much space will your fish need? Do you need special lighting or heating elements? Do you want fish that are relatively easy to care for as a beginner or are you up to a more challenging species of aquatic creature? Once you have answers to these questions you will be better able to go out and get the supplies you need to create the indoor aquarium of your dreams.

Picking a Tank

When you are picking your tank, you will want to take into consideration the size of your apartment and where you are going to set this tank up. You will want a tank plenty big for your fish that also gets to be in a spot in your home where you can enjoy watching your fish daily. Be sure whatever surface your tank will be on is plenty sturdy for potentially 100+ pounds of water and tank. Ensure that the tank and filter are appropriate for the kind of fish you want to fill it with, and big enough for tank plants, hides, and the fish themselves.

Setting Up Your Aquarium

Before you go out and bring your fish home you will want to set up the tank in preparation. Clean the tank beforehand before filling it. Rinse whatever gravel or tank substrate you are going to be using and then place it down first. Then clean and add any hideaways, aquatic plants, stones, or driftwood. Install the appropriate filtration system so that the tank stays clean. Fill the tank with water and then add whatever chemicals you need for the fish you intend on adding. Run the filter and allow the tank to cycle for a few days or weeks to ensure the tank is stabilized before adding fish.

Add Your Fish

Lastly, it is time to add whatever fish and aquatic creatures you have been planning for. Choose fish that are compatible in size, diet, and habitat preferences. Consider starting with a few hardy fish, adding more delicate species once you get used to their care and maintenance. Continue to research the needs of your fish—what they eat, how they interact with other fish, and what illnesses they may be prone to. Also, be sure to establish a routine for keeping the tank clean and the fish happy. Before you know it you will be addicted to fishkeeping and will be enjoying raising many beautiful aquatic creatures in your apartment.
