Should I Consider Renter’s Insurance in My Budget?

There are a lot of reasons to consider getting renter’s insurance for your apartment. Some landlords will require that you have this type of insurance in place from the start or you will not be allowed to rent from them at all. Others are not worried about it and leave the decision up to the tenant. Whether this is a requirement for your apartment complex or not, it is a good idea to find some room in your budget to afford renter’s insurance to keep you protected.

Renter’s insurance is a good idea for the tenant. Most renter’s are able to find a good amount of coverage in their policy for about $14 a month, though it will depend on the policy that you get and how much coverage you would like to have at the same time. You should shop around a bit to look at a few different policies from different providers. They can offer different prices and different amounts of coverage as well. Discussing some of your needs can help make sure that all of your items are protected.

But why is this such an important thing for a tenant to have? If something does happen to the apartment and all of your items are stolen or damaged, the policy is going to step in and give you money to help cover that loss, allowing you to go back out and get those items again. The landlord’s policy is there to protect the property itself in case of a fire or flooding, but it will not provide any type of protection for you and your personal items if they are damaged in that same incident and you don’t have insurance.

If you do move at any time, make sure to inform your renter’s insurance policy and see if there are any changes that you need to make along the way. This will help protect all of your personal items and will ensure you get reimbursed for the damage if it does happen.
