The working principle of double shear beam load cell

　　The double shear beam load cell is used to measure the compressive force. This type of load cell is a variant of the shear beam load cell and is generally rated for higher loads. In the double shear beam load cell, the force acts in the center of the device. This makes the double shear beam load cell less sensitive to uneven loads. The core element of the load cell is a spring element, which consists of a metal part that deforms elastically under load and recovers when no force is applied. This deformation or strain is detected by a strain gauge mounted on the metal element and converted into an electrical signal. The double shear beam load cell contains two such spring elements and is calibrated in units of grams, kilograms, or tons.

　　The double shear beam load cell is commonly found in multi-ton heavy-duty scales, so it is most suitable for silo scales, container scales, vehicle scales, and weighing racks. The double shear beam load cell is also used for force measurement in the testing machine.

　　Since double shear beam load cells are mainly used in industrial applications, they are designed to withstand adverse operating conditions and usually have an IP67 or IP68 rating. This means that the load cell is protected from dust, splashes, and even immersion (IP68 only). To determine the most suitable load cell for a specific application, the following parameters must be considered: rated load, limit or failure load, and the minimum scale used to calculate the allowable tare weight. These specifications can be found in the datasheet of the load cell. Since load cells are usually impedance-tuned (current output calibration), multiple sensors can be installed in parallel without the need for subsequent equipment calibration.
