Characteristics of High Manganese Steel Castings

High chrome white iron castings and high manganese steel castings are currently the most widely used wear-resistant materials. however, due to the customers' poor understanding of these two materials, the wear resistance of high chromium high manganese steel castings is sometimes doubted. So let's first understand the wear-resistant principle of these two materials:

1.Characteristics of high manganese steel:

High manganese steel has good plasticity and impact toughness. Under the impact of external force, a hardened layer is generated on the surface. After the hardened surface layer is worn, a new surface layer appears and continues to be work hardened.

Therefore, high manganese steel castings have high surface wear resistance and the inner part still retains the original mechanical properties. Because high manganese steel has the above characteristics, no wear-resistant material can completely replace high manganese steel in the world at present.

2.Characteristics and Application of High Chromium Wear Resistant Cast Iron:

High chromium cast iron with chromium content of 12-30% and carbon content of 2.4-3.6% can obtain matrix of martensite or austenite or their mixture and special carbide of chromium by means of high alloying and heat treatment.

The eutectic structure in high chromium cast iron is different from that in ordinary cast iron. In general, the ledeburite in cast iron is a continuous network, while the eutectic carbide with high chromium is in the state of broken blocks and strips. It is equivalent to embedding high-hardness particles in the substrate. Therefore, it not only has good abrasion resistance, but also greatly weakens the embrittlement of the high hardness phase and has relatively good toughness.

From the above introduction, we can see that not all castings using these two materials will have high wear resistance. Only according to different materials and working environment, using different materials can achieve better wear resistance.
