What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted and stretched veins that can be observed on any part of the body. Usually, they are visible on the legs and feet. The major reason for their occurrence is extra pressure on the veins. Varicose veins can cause pain in the legs when they reach their severe stage. If the condition is left untreated for a long time can cause serious health issues.

What causes varicose veins?

Veins and arteries together function to transport blood throughout the body. The arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart towards the different parts of the body whereas the veins carry deoxygenated blood from the lower parts to the heart in the upward direction. When the vein valves are damaged due to additional force of blood, the blood circulation becomes obstructed. So, what are the major factors behind their occurrence?

 Age: When you overage, the possibility of the occurrence of varicose veins becomes double. Since aging can result in wear and tear on the valves that cause the blood to flow in the wrong direction i.e back down into your veins ending in pooling of blood inside the veins making them varicose.

Pregnancy- During pregnancy, women are more likely to suffer from varicose veins as, during this period, they need extra blood for the growth of the baby. This extra blood pressure decreases the flow of your blood from your legs to your pelvis. These changes in the circulatory system can result in varicose veins.

Family History- This disease also can occur due to genetic reasons i.e a family history also plays a major role in the growth of varicose veins.

Obesity- when a person is having extra weight, he/she is putting extra pressure on their legs. And this extra pressure can obstruct the blood flow within the veins causing it to faulty and may end in varicose veins.

Standing or sitting for too long- if you want to maintain a healthy blood flow, it is essential not to be in the same body posture for an extended period of time as it can lead faulty circulation system leading to varicose veins.

What Vein treatment options are available?

Fortunately, people won’t have to live with these unsightly veins as there is a wide range of vein treatments are available;

Spider & Varicose Vein Treatment:

Sclerotherapy:  It is a nonsurgical procedure that is conducted in the doctor’s office. During this treatment, a vein specialist injects a chemical solution directly to the varicose/spider veins in order to make them collapse and fade away eventually. The treatment encompasses special needles and syringes.

Surface Varicose Vein Treatment:

Ambulatory Phlebectomy: It is a minimally invasive procedure that helps eleminate surface varicose veins. The treatment is conducted under the administration of local anesthesia. Then a vein specialist pulls the diseased veins through the small punctures that do not need any stitches.

An End to Outdated Vein Stripping Techniques:

The VNUS Closure Procedure: During this process, the vein doctor inserts a catheter into the diseased veins through a small hole in the skin using ultrasound. The laser device transmits the RF energy to the lining of the vein wall. After that, your vein doctor delivers the RF energy to the vein all in order to heat them causing the collagen in the wall to make them shrink and close eventually.

Consult your vein specialist in order to have a proper diagnosis and treatment.
