How to Maintain High Efficiency of Ship Incinerators?

Waste generation on ships is not a new thing. With a vast majority of seagoing vessels using heavy amounts of sludge generation, HFO bunker as fuels, operational waste is bound to take place. So where do you think all the ship’s waste is put into? It is inside an incinerator, a machinery system which burns this waste coming from cardboard, oily rags, onboard waste paper and waste oil generated in the engine room.

Regular maintenance of combustion equipment is required in order to get the maximum efficiency from the incinerator. Covered below are a few useful tips following which becomes easy to increase the incinerator’s efficiency.

Clean the in-line filters

Each and every incinerator will consist of a number of filters in its fuel supply line, a Y-type strainer and a duplex waste oil strainer for its pilot ignitor burner. To avoid blockage of the fuel oil line by contaminants and maintain flow, these filters should be cleaned regularly.

Check the exhaust fan

See to it that the exhaust fan is driven at a sufficient draught so as to maintain the negative pressure to the combustion chamber and make sure of the proper circulation of the exhaust gas so that the gas cannot blow out of the chamber while it’s in use.

Adjust the burner air damper

Through the damper placed under the burner on the wind box wall, the main burner is supplied with combustion air. In order to get good combustion with minimum smoke, adjust it carefully depending on the oil feed rate.

Adjust the furnace air damper

To burn solid wastes in the combustion chamber, the damper is to adjust manual air. In several incinerator models, this damper can also work in auto mode so as to dilute the combustion air in the furnace and control the fuel gas temperature. For combustion and cooling, secure the air flow. Good ventilation and a hot chamber are required for waste to burn well with minimum smoke.
