Because it slows everything down, you take less damage, and your mana is actually taking less damage rather than recovering through combat. The reaper path is superior, in my opinion, because it allows  to take less damage while taking less damage. I believe the cost of reaper has been reduced as well, which is a positive for survivability and helps you regenerate mana more quickly.
