Levels of Hearing Loss and What do They Mean?

Hearing loss is classified into five categories depending on its level.

  • Mild hearing loss

Usually, the quietest sounds that people with mild hearing loss can hear are between 25 to 34dB. This indicates that they cannot hear soft sounds such as a clock ticking. They might be able to carry on and follow one on one conversations. However, they normally find it difficult to keep up with conversations in noisy and distractive environments.  When one experiences mild hearing loss, a hearing aid is prescribed to amplify soft sounds and make hearing easier.

  • Moderate hearing loss

Individuals with moderate hearing loss cannot hear less than 40-75 dB sounds. They struggle to keep up and understand everyday speech. You will find that individuals suffering from the moderate hearing will not hear sounds such as the doorbell or telephone ringing. They also have difficulties hearing conversations in many situations. Having middle ear implants or hearing aids help improve moderate hearing loss.

  • Moderately severe hearing loss

People with moderately severe hearing loss have difficulties hearing sound below 50 to 64 dB. Without hearing aids, individuals cannot understand speech in most situations. Hearing aids help them listen to what others are saying in conversations.

  • Severe hearing loss

Someone with severe hearing loss cannot communicate without wearing their hearing aids. It is difficult for them to be part of a conversation without hearing aids. They cannot listen to sounds below 65 to75 dB. They depend on lip-reading even when they are using hearing aids. They require powerful hearing aids, which in some cases are not as effective; hence other treatments options such as middle ear implants or cochlear implants are recommended.

  • Profound hearing loss

Individuals with profound hearing loss rely on sign language or lip reading to communicate. They have a weak sense of hearing, and strong hearing aids or implants are required to improve their hearing sense. They don't hear sound softer than 80 to 110 dB. This indicates it is hard to listen to sounds like aeroplane engines or fire alarms. The best option for profound hearing loss is a cochlear implant.
