Managing a large team is an incredibly challenging task that few people get right. However, if you’re able to effectively manage a large team of employees, you’ll reap many benefits! Whether you manage your workforce virtually or in-person, here are a few quick tips to help you do it as effectively and smoothly as possible.

Get to know the people you manage.

To create a successful work environment, you have to be willing to connect with your team and build relationships with them. That way, they’ll know that you’re fully invested and that you actually care. Check in with them often and prioritize one-on-ones. Or, if you manage your workforce virtually, give them a quick call. Don’t micromanage, but make sure they know you’re there to help and support them. Although it requires more time and energy on your part, getting to know your team will encourage them to trust you and communicate well and frequently. Don’t try to do everything on your own.

Make sure you delegate tasks and avoid trying to tackle it all by yourself. If you’re constantly taking phone calls or busy at your desk, you won’t have time to check in with your team or make yourself available for their concerns and needs. Delegating tasks also gives your team the opportunity to grow, learn new skills, and be recognized for their achievements.

Ask for honest feedback.

Instead of making every single decision for the team, ask your employees what they think. This will encourage and empower them and many employees enjoy a say or some input over what their day and job looks like. By asking for input, it also shows that you trust your team and you value their insight. This will go a long way with your employees and they’ll be more likely to be honest and open about their opinions, which leads to more creative solutions and innovations.

Have senior employees serve as mentors.

If you’re leading a large team of employees, you may not have as much time as you’d like to get the newest members of the team up to speed. This is where mentorship comes in handy. Have senior employees act as mentors to the new hires to help them adjust to the work culture and acclimate to the duties of their job. Working side-by-side with a mentor will make the team better by improving the efficacy of onboarding, increasing employee retention, and enhancing relationships between new and old employees.

When you manage your workforce virtually (especially a large team), there will always be new challenges to conquer. However, implementing the tips listed above can help you create a more productive, efficient, and welcoming work environment for all.
