Different Kinds of Outpatient Programs

When it comes to determining what road to rehabilitation works best for you, it is important to understand your options and what level of help you need. Outpatient programs can be incredibly beneficial when it comes to rehabilitation since they can be flexible and allow for some degree of normalcy during recovery.

Outpatient programs are only ideal for mild cases of addiction or drug dependancy. If you or someone you love has a serious substance addiction accompanied by mental disorders, suicidal thoughts, or violence, it is much more effective to use inpatient programs so that you have 24hr support.

There are three main types of outpatient rehabilitation programs for recovering substance abusers: partial hospitalization (or day treatment), intensive outpatient programs, and care groups.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Partial Hospitalization Programs, or PHPs, are highly structured programs requiring patients to come in 5-7 days a week for either a part or full day, and to participate in several hours of therapy, counseling, group work, medication detoxes, and skill-building activities. They can then return home at the end of that day to a supportive family or community.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Intensive Outpatient Programs, or IOPs, are more flexible programs, sometimes allowing for day or evening meeting times so that a patient can continue to work their job or attend school. The meetings are frequent at the beginning of the program, but gradually decrease as you learn healthy coping skills and enter into a strong community outside the program. There are group and individual activities, therapy, and counseling, as well as the opportunity to have therapy sessions that include family and friends. These programs allow patients to practice what they learn in everyday situations, but require that you have a stable home system.

Support Groups

Support groups, or care groups, are a final stage of outpatient program that allow you to continue to experience support from a group of individuals all committed to sobriety. Support groups continue to equip you with life skills as well as providing a safe space to discuss accomplishments and challenges and get help and support. These groups are often gender, age, or substance specific.

In Closing

Deciding which outpatient rehabilitation program is right for you will depend on the severity of your trouble, the stability of your home situation, and the recommendation of your healthcare provider.

There is never shame in getting help and healthcare professionals should approach any issue in substance abuse not as a moral failing, but as a psychological or physical problem that can be remedied.
