Five Ways to Start the Day Well

How we start our mornings could very well set the tone for our entire day. If we stumble and rush through those first hours we may find ourselves uncentered, moody, and easily distracted all day long. 

Everyone is different, so this is by no means a prescriptive list of things to do, but rather five ways or practices that can help you enter the day with more calm and focus.

 

1. Movement 

A great way to step into a new day is to engage your whole body in some kind of activity. What this looks like depends on what you enjoy personally, what you find relaxing, or what you have time for. Some people enjoy gentle stretching or yoga first thing in the morning. Others enjoy a nice leisurely (or brisk) walk outside. Or maybe you want to go ahead and get your entire workout done first thing in the morning. Whatever suits you is what will be easier to make a habit so pick something you enjoy.

 

2. Meditation 

Meditation is one of the best practices to help you begin your day from a centered, healthy place. You can mediate independently or with some guidance, sitting or walking, with prayer or gratitude practices, journaling or reading–there is no one right way. What you need is just some time to slow down and be present with your thoughts and feelings so that you head into the day with a clear head.

 

3. Music 


One super-easy way to get going in the morning is to set the mood with music. This is a particularly great way to start the day right because you can listen to music while you get ready for the day. You don’t need any extra time or space, you just need your tunes.

 

4. Make Your Bed 


While it may seem like a small thing, something as basic as making your bed could help you transition from sleep into the day. There is a sense of accomplishment even with something so seemingly small and it can catapult you into the day with more positivity. Other small ways you can feel more put together in the morning include brushing your teeth, taking a shower, and quickly tidying up any small messes from the day before.

 

5. Mug It Up 


One last way you can start your day right is with a cup of something warm or refreshing. Not only does the beverage itself lend itself to a sense of calm, but many people see the preparation of the beverage as much of a ritual as actually drinking it. The beverage can be whatever you like, it is your choice, coffee, loose leaf tea, or even lemon water are all common drinks that can prepare you for the day ahead.

You can take and adapt these tips however you need to, whatever works for your schedule and preferences. Hopefully, as you begin to add them to your morning routine you find you have more peace as you move into each day.
