Friday Night Funkin' (abbreviated FNF) is an open-source music project. Donationware rhythm game first released for a game jam in 2020. Cameron "Ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r worked together to create the game. Some gameplay elements are shared with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper, and the game's aesthetic is influenced by Flash games. The game is credited with bringing users back to Newgrounds, a site that peaked in popularity in the early 2000s.
The roster in the game is mostly made up of characters from external media on the Newgrounds site.
Friday night funkin game revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must compete in singing and rapping contests against a variety of characters in order to date his love interest, Girlfriend. The goal of the game is to mimic your opponent's notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song.
The game was originally created for the October 2020 Ludum Dare 47 game jam.
Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game in which the player controls Boyfriend, a character who must defeat a series of opponents in order to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend.
The player must complete a series of levels known as "weeks," each of which contains three songs. Each week, the player faces a new opponent, though some games deviate from this by including multiple opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a series of notes (represented by arrows), which the player must then mimic by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs introduce more complex patterns, with the player's pattern occasionally differing from the opponent's or both singers performing a duet.
Each week, the player can choose one of three difficulties: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty increases, so does the speed of the incoming arrows, and the arrow patterns become more complex. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and displayed in the upper right hand corner of the week selection screen. The game has two modes of play: a story campaign in which songs are played linearly and a "free play" mode in which any of the game's music tracks can be chosen at random.
Four Newgrounds users collaborated to create Friday Night Funkin, a free rhythm game. Ninjamuffin99 wrote the code. Friday Night Funkin For PC was uploaded to the Newgrounds website by the developers. Following that, Newgrounds users begin playing their game. After trending on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch, the FNF game becomes extremely popular.
