Organic Meat: What Does It Mean, And Is It Really Better?

With nearly billions of animals being raised and slaughtered every year alone, it's clear that livestock production is having a major impact on people's health and the environment. So whether you're buying animal products from grocery stores or family farms, it's important to make sure they are animal-friendly, especially since animals aren't given basic rights within our production system.

What is organic meat?

Did you know that hormone-free meat is more expensive than regular meat? This is because hormone-free animal products, including meat, are manufactured using modern methods involving animal antibiotics and hormones. Meat that is certified organic means that: - The animals were given care in a manner that complied with organic certification standards - Any antibiotics or preservatives were not used in the animals (this includes things like additives to feed) - The food they eat was grown without any pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

It's no secret that meat is a major contributor to meat consumption. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization claimed that 75% of all the grain produced in 2014 was used for animal feed. They claim that if all of the grain used for animal feed were fed directly to humans instead, global starvation would dramatically decrease. Since organic farming practices prohibit synthetic chemicals, it also prohibits water and soil contamination - which helps eliminate droughts. This promotes biodiversity as well.

What is the difference between the nutritional profile of organic meat and grass-fed meat?

Even when there isn't much evidence to prove that organic meat is any more nutritious overall, there is conclusive proof that organic meat contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids. The findings of a study compiled 67 different studies on organic meat brisbane versus conventional meat revealed the following: while there were no significant differences in minerals and antioxidants, notable differences were found in polyunsaturated fats like omega-3s and omega-6s.

On average, organic beef contains 16% more omega-6 fatty acids and a whopping 47% more omega-3 fatty acids. This is monumental, considering the modern diet favors omega-6 fatty acid at a 19:1 ratio when the recommended ratio should be around 1:1. An unbalanced ratio favoring omega-6 fatty acids can lead to inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and many other problems.

Organic offers one important benefit over its conventional counterparts. While it may be more expensive per pound, organic meat sunshine coast products are raised without hormones or antibiotics and are fed an all-natural diet. In some cases, organic grass-fed meats can also contain higher omega-3 fatty acids than their conventionally raised lab brethren. It can be hard to find a good balance in your diet but always remember that the best option is to support small farms to continue to produce high-quality, tasty meats while prioritizing the health of both animals and our environment.

Organic meat and dairy have been better in all categories: animal welfare, sustainability, and nutritional value. The treatment of animals by farmers follows a strict guideline for all organic-certified products. The natural, additive-free feed raises healthier animals and reduces greenhouse gas emissions while increasing the nutritional value for all animal products: eggs, dairy, and meat. So while farmed meat will never be as sustainable as pulses, it helps to be a conscientious consumer when purchasing your food. Know where the food on your plate is from and make sure that it's organic.
